Pepsi vs Root Beer: Different Cyclops

I bought my grail watch today - WG Pepsi on Oyster (116719 from 2015) and noticed notably weaker cyclop magnification ratio compared to my wife’s Root Beer (2020). I thought all Rolex cyclops are the same but looks like it’s not the case. Curious to see how other GMT Masters compare in this regard, e.g. old Batman vs steel Pepsi and Batgirl or maybe it’s just early WG Pepsi ‘feature’?

There were a couple years where the cyclops magnification were lower than they used to. Maybe 2015/2016 timeframe. There were many that sent there watches in to get the cyclops replaced if I recall. My wife's 36mm DJ has a lower mag cyclops but says she likes it better than my higher powered BLNR.

This was an issue a few years ago, yours may be in the “having the issue” time period.
Depends on how you feel. One thing I don’t like is to send my watch off for something minor and gets returned with something else minor or worse, major.
I’d live with it until service time.
Congrats on the watch, I’m assuming that you’re done with thoroughly scrutinizing it, now enjoy it.

Thanks for the replies! Nice to know. I want to challenge the local Rolex AD/SC for the dial replacement to the blue version. If they agree - it would be good if they replace the cyclope too for the “correct” version.

I wasn't aware of this - very interesting.

Perhaps controversial but I think the size of the date under the lower magnification looks more proportionate to the indices.

This was an issue for a period of time during those years. 2.5 magnification was more like 1.5

Congratulations on the watch, it’s a beauty

Actually I tend to think similarly: I’m a dial symmetry nazi - thus I hate SDs apart from SD43, most sport Pateks apart from 5711 because their date window is so awkwardly located and lots of other watches such as AP15500 (while 15400 is perfect in my view), Blancpain FFs because their date window is literally 0.5mm dislocated. The cyclop is a genial thing which fixes this issue for me and the one on my new Pepsi is even better as it makes the date absolutely symmetrical to the 9-hour marker! So, I think I’m keeping it like it is - a feature, not a bug!

Absolutely! You are definitely already owning this piece.

That WG GMT date looks terrible. I've seen replicas with better magnification. I'd ask an AD about getting that resolved.

I’m collecting my 2016 NOS DJ2 from RSC tomorrow having had that exact same problem.

Cyclops wasn’t magnifying like my other DJ2’s.

Rolex have replaced the crystal and cyclops under warranty.

I tried living with it as it was, but actually I found the reduced mag a problem when wearing it in rotation with my other watches. Made it seem like a fake.

Can’t wait to see it tomorrow now corrected.

There was an issue with this in that time frame and Rolex was swapping crystals free of charge but would not admit there was an issue. Get it fixed.

Thank you all for the valuable info and suggestions! Will visit the boutique in the coming days and will ask for the crystal and dial replacement during the normal service. Lets see what will they say...
