Wedding Sub

Interesting story (I suppose).

I borrowed a friends sub to wear on my wedding day over 2 years ago (116610LN). What I didn't think through is how attached I would get to the sub for sentimental reasons. So, over the course of the last few years I have been talking him into selling it to me.

I think he is finally ready to sell it, with the caveat that he still wants a sub. He contacted a local dealer that basically said "good luck" and everything else online (full kit) seems to be around $13-$14k. Are these the prices everyone else is seeing?

Will I have to pay him $13-14k for a watch that he paid close to $7 for?

Mostly sharing for a fun story/if anyone else has any tips or ideas. In some ways the "wedding watch" is kind of priceless to me, and I could theoretically afford it, but was really hoping to work something out under $10.

Thoughts?

You're not going to work something out under $10k but you could get a new old stock 116610LN, if your friend is willing to exchange like for like. He gets a newer watch, you get your wedding watch.

You will be looking at $11-12k on here, which is a lot more reasonable, I think.

Just go buy one for yourself, it’s just stuff, if it had that much attachment you wouldn’t be questioning the cost

If you are sentimentally attached to that particular watch. You much seriously entertain the possibility of ponying up for the full wack-up in order for your friend to replace it at his convenience.
Alternately you may choose to buy him a new one and give it to him on the condition that an exchange is made.
It's only fair and reasonable.
Make the effort and take the opportunity to strengthen your relationship with him. He did carry the risk and was gracious enough to lend it to you in the first place so you could wear it.

Does he need another 40mm or can you get on a wait list and get him a 41mm as a substitute? Either way, should be able to find a comp for less than 13-14k. Hopefully he doesnt have any sentimental attachment as well lol.

You are the one begging your friend to sell, and he understandably wants a new watch... the 126610 is in that 13-14K range on the grey market, and even the 116610 is above 10K.

I think your friend’s request is reasonable... if you have been begging him because of the sentimental value of the wedding watch, I think you should do it, not haggle, and be grateful.

I'd pay what my friend was asking if I felt like you. I don't think I'd get attach to something I borrowed, but who knows!?

He just want me to replace the watch with the same watch. Box and papers. Does not care if its purchased from an AD or on grey market. Really enthusiastic about getting me the watch, he just loves his. The idea of replacing it with a brand new 2020 is an interesting one.

So...there is that.

Wedding Sub

He was kind enough to let you borrow his watch for your wedding. Now you want it from him and he’s kind enough to entertain the idea. Go find him exactly what will work for him and don’t worry about a few grand. He’s done a lot for you. Don’t be cheap. What he paid is irrelevant. If he paid $25 for Apple stock would you expect him to sell it to you for $25 because you’re emotionally attached? Of course not.

Have to agree, try the ADs first..You never know unless you ask, slim chance but there's been many good timing stories.

You're going to have to figure out a way to finagle a brand new Sub from an AD to give to him as replacement.

I’m not being cheap, I, trying to figure out what the market is. If its 13 or 14, that’s fine. Just wanted to confirm.

Hold on. Did the guy tell your story to the AD?

I can’t imagine with a story like this they wouldn’t help him source one.

He actually did tell the AD that he wants to sell it, but not the whole story. We are going to reach back to the AD and see if she would search for something. No particular rush to get the watch immediately.

If I wait a few years, it might be $18k for a sub haha
