With $100k, the smart money is to buy 8 Daytonas at MSRP.

Things to consider:
Watches are extremely hype and price bubble is at all time high. Expect prices to go down overall and likely never reach today's hype status. There's a cost associated with buying and selling. Just because a website lists a watch you own for $X you figure you'd probably be able to actually get $X(.7) for it and don't forget to record that as income on your tax return. Any watch you think may go up in value is likely out of reach for you unless you always have unlimited access to purchase the hottest new models at MSRP without buying anything else. You don't and Grey Market vendors are smarter than you and you'll never make money off them. You don't have to buy stocks but there's always getting yourself out of debt, paying off mortgage, fixing your car/buying a new one that's more efficient, home upgrades and other things that would likely provide more financial and lifestyle benefit. If after all this you want to invest in watches, buy unwanted Rolex models from an individual seller for the lowest price you can negotiate without box and papers and hope they go up in value over time (5-20 years). Think Airking for about $4000, Explorer $5000, Yachtmaster II $12,000. |

Most liquid watch brands (and models)?
Pretty sure investing in a fund or a business makes more in return. There are only few watch brands can increase in value.. Rolex, Holy Trinity Grails and LE.
You have to remember if your plan on selling the watches. Let say in 5-10 years, there a 50:50 chance it would gain in value and you have to remember on the sellers fee. Most individual buyers will sell watches to AD or reputable dealers for a profit at 10-30%+ loss. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Good point, logical from the historical perspective and in keeping with OP's goal. Also, imagine the nanoseconds of fun and satisfaction OP could enjoy posting pics of those Daytonas whenever a TRF thread calls for it. For the rest of the time though might it become just a little bit boring to own 8 Daytonas?

You couldn’t even get one Daytona at retail ever since it came out, smartest would be to go back in time and get at least ten hulks in like 2012 with discounts.

Rather than lecture you on the trite statement that watches aren't good investments,I will play along:
My rule - only buy pre-owned/grey market and some watches without box and papers for these prices. No AD games. 1) Rolex Milgauss white dial (7k) 2) Rolex Explorer I 214270 (7k) 3) Air King modern version (6.5k) 4) Rolex Explorer II 16570 (8k) 5) Lange 1, 10-20 years old (20k) 6) Patek 5227 (30k) 7) Patek 5035 (22k) This is not my personal perfect collection for 100k, but rather my best guess on quality pieces I think are undervalued and will keep going up, with some brand variety for fun. Rolex-only would be financially wise but dull. Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk |

Everybody has an opinion on what to buy or not buy,
Everybody says watches are no investments, Everybody says prices are too high and they will come down, Reality is no one knows what will happen and what will be next hype. If we look at history, the watches nobody wanted in the past are the most valuable today. Extrapolate into today, buy a code 11:59, a GP and other Blancpain etc... And in 50 years you’ll be a millionaire. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I like Sinanamus’ suggestions. Here’s a few more that I like personally in random order:
- Milgauss z-blue - JLC Tribute to Deep Sea - JLC Tribute to Memovox - IWC 3711 - Patek 5960 blue dial - any limited Bulgari Octo Finissimo - wildcard: limited Moser If anything, this is going to give you a pretty varied collection that is unlikely to lose you any money. |
