The blue dial, fluted bezel, and Jubilee bracelet make for a classic, timeless look.

My first two Rolex were Datejusts. I wouldn't even look at anything else. That was 30 yrs ago. After being bitten by the bug again from a 14060 10 yrs ago l wouldn't consider anything but sports models for some time until I saw a Zblue in person and then the Wimbledon came out in SS and now their both favorites in my collection.

I had Sub, Daytona and DJ 41 but I really liked my DJ 41 over any sports model.
I would go for the DD40 eventually for my grail watch + 1 SS sports model.

I would say that's a DJ or any watch is a poor addition is if it's not a watch you want or like. Otherwise if you truly like it then there's always a reason for it in the collection.

The DJ in the majority of the cases is welcome in any collection.
Personally I would consider the DJ a redundant choice if you already have a Day-Date WG, but in combination with Sub, GMT, Daytona, Explorer and OP, I would say that a DJ fluted bezel / Jubilee bracelet is a perfect watch to add.

This is a terrible pic of mine, but it's the only one that I have in my phone at the moment. I need to take some better ones, preferably in sunlight, that do the dial justice.

At some point in the threads it's always mentioned that you either just suck it up and pay the premium on grey market or be forced to buy "undesirable" models from your AD to work your way up their priority list.

I know that is somewhat true, but what about the DJ36/41? Smooth Bezel, Fluted Bezel, Oyster Bracelet, Jubilee Bracelet, Bright Color Dial, Stealth Color Dial, Two Tone, Full Precious Metal, Roman Numerals, Stick Indices. Honest to god, there has to be something close to 50ish variations of this watch that moves it ALL over the spectrum of sporty, dressy, loud, or understated.

I'm well aware that this model has picked up in popularity over the last 5 years, and it's not at all uncommon to walk into an AD and see 0 datejust 41s on display, but it's also true that if you ask for one many AD's are more than happy to source one for you in 3 months or less as opposed to resisting laughing in your face for walking in and asking for a sky-dweller. So in that regard, especially with new rolex owners... when is a datejust36/41 redundant or a poor choice. Honestly the only watches i can think of that would even KIND of make the DJ a redundant choice are the Omega Aqua Terra or Audemar Piguet Royal Oak.

I guess my point is what's wrong with getting a DJ as your first watch? The only reason I can think of is if you're hardset on the explorers or submariner for their "toughness" if that's even a thing.
I agree, it's good for people who want maybe a datejust for everyday use and say a gold sub as their best however if someone simply wants a steel submariner as their only and forever watch, having to buy something they don't want at all is still an annoyance as not everybody wants to own multiple Rolex's.

Don’t understand that train of thought. The DJ is classic and timeless. A great addition to any collection.

Never a bad choice.

The fluted bezel is timeless; every time I look at mine I am stunned by the glamour it exudes.

Never, they are just slightly boring compared to sports watches.

There is nothing wrong with a Datejust. It’s Rolex best selling watch. I love my TT DJ & I’m thinking of adding a SS blue dial with a jubilee bracelet.

DJ is a fantastic watch. My wife's 26mm DJ was her daily watch for 7 years before it needed its first maintenance. (And she is not easy on her watches.)

I had one before and need to add one to my collection sometime in future again. If you have a DD, or another DJ, perhaps then you don't need one in yours.

There’s nothing wrong with a DJ as a first Rolex...it is an icon of the brand (and all of watchdom). There are so many different combinations of DJs. On the one hand, this means that there is at least one configuration that’s a match for each person. On the other hand, I think people’s frustration is not that DJs are the most available model at ADs. Rather, in many cases, none of the DJs that are available are the configuration that the enthusiast actually wants. So I can see it being a suboptimal purchase if the DJ is not configured the way one prefers. Part of the broader advice “Buy what you want to wear, and don’t settle.”

There's nothing wrong with DJs. I've had a couple and for now I'm not heads over heels over them so on to other models. Actually there aren't many Rolex models that I'd buy but there are a few.

DJ41 was my first Rolex, it is a real beauty, my wife liked it so much I had to get her one, I have just added the new Submariner so now I have a really awesome two watch Rolex collection.

Datejusts are great. Us watch nerds flock to sports models (me included). Regardless, the DJ is absolutely timeless. I find the smooth bezel underwhelming and just looks off. Not cause it is a bad watch, just given the option to have jubilee flutted, I wouldn’t be able to pick any other combination.

No reason it can’t be a first or one and only. It is not as versatile as Sub / explorer, but hardly by much. Looks fine In shorts and amazing in a suit.

When is a datejust ever a poor addition to a collection???

Sold the DJ TT and purchased a SS black dial stick. Very pleased.

The DJ is a great first watch or anytime addition to a collection. I have DJ41, blue dial fluted on a jubilee and love it.

However, it will not hold it's value as well as a sports model. This may or may not be important to you.

The Rolex Datejust series (especially the '41mm') has always been and always will be my favorite reference.
