I was telling a friend of mine today about someone I was showing my Daytona and they asked: "How come it's not running?" They were looking at the chronograph hand, not the mini-dial to see if it was ticking. He told me a better story. He owns a vintage Oysterquartz (Beautiful watch), and was showing it to someone when they accused him of it being fake. Their reasoning was that all Rolex's were automatics, not quartz, and only the FAKE ones had the quartz tick-tick movement. My friend was going to point out that Rolex in fact DID put out a line of quartz watches several years ago, but thought better of wasting the breath trying to convince this moron who was so proud of himself for calling him out with a "fake" Rolex. Anyway...

I thought it an interesting point. The Oysterquartz is not that well known to the (non-WIS) public, and I remember way back when the first thing you would check on a Rolex is if it had the automatic movement vs. the quartz to verify it was real. I wonder if you OysterQuartz owners have had to deal with this stigma?

I was out at a bar one night in a crappy part of town (had a bad day and needed a drink on the way home and did not pick the smartest area). Anyway as I was sitting at the bar having my drink a couple local "Hommies" (that is what they called eachother) came up and started kinda trash talking to me and then saw a TT watch on my wrist. Next thing you know is "Damn boy thats a Rolex, those aint cheap!" and more talk of the sort at which point I just turned and started to laugh at them and said HAHA joke is on you guys its a lousy fake, look it ticks its fake and at that point they started to laugh and tell me how their girls carry fake Gucci & Prada bags.... I finished my drink, said goodnight and bought them both a drink as I was walking out (figure by myself a bit more time to get to the car)....

I have told people my watch is fake before or sometimes when they ask is that real I give a laugh and say "come on, what do you think??"

I have noticed myself starting to wear other brands when going to less desirable areas as not nearly as many people recognize a Panerai or IWC.

back when I had a OQ everyone knew I would not wear a fake anything. So never had any issues.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that the last of the oyster quartz did not tick! The one second tick comes from the problem that every tick consumes energy, that is battery. Therefore to make an quarts second hand move the same as a Rolex mechanical watch, the hand would have to move 8 times a second instead of only once. The result would be 8 times the battery drain. That being said I have seen video of an Oyster Quartz that had a smooth running second hand. Never seen it in real life might of been a hoax Vid. Anyone else out there seen a Oyster Quartz with a smooth running second hand?

They all tick each second. I do know that automatic movements were later fitted to the OQ case so perhaps that's what you saw?

Anyone versed enough to have heard that fake Rolex's tick is savvy enough to be enlightened about the OQ. Mine can tick all it wants, I could care less. What I do care about is accuracy and when I check them every month to find they've only gained a second or two I just smile... smugly.

Sorry Woody, was not paying out on quartz, the most accrete time pice you can have on your wrist, but I did see a vid of an Oyster Quarts with a smooth running second hand. If it is not a hoax then credence to Rolex, I do wonder about the battery life of such a watch if it does exist.

I'm not an Oysterquartz owner (hopefully a future one though) and I wish Rolex still made quartz movements . . . I guess there were not enough out there who agree on wanting quartz Rolexes to keep the production going though . . .

wow fantstic watches, Woody.That has happened to me a few times actually, but i usually dont explain that its a quartz....most people assume if it doesnt "sweep" its fake, then again they think that their seikos or fossils are really nice.

Non-WIS always point to two false indicators of a fake Rolex. The sweeping hand (the sweep is 8 beats per second so it does tick) and Rolex never made a watch with a battery which as most of us know they did.

I used to work at a jewelry store about 10 years ago. We did watch battery changes on the spot. A former football player from the CFL (Canadian Football League) walked in with a quartz rolex. A lady took it from him and she whispered to me that it was fake because it was a Rolex and had a battery. I didnt say anything.
