Why does Rolex make garish watches like Rainbow Daytona?
Rolex is primarily known for classy, timeless models like Datejust, Daydate, Submariner and GMT. And yet they also make watches (albeit in very small numbers) that anyone but a rapper would be embarrassed to wear. I've always wondered why Rolex bothers making watches like Rainbow Daytona and Leopard Daytona, which seem to be totally inconsistent with Rolex's design ethos. It can’t be for the money, as these watches are made in extremely small numbers and hardly affect Rolex’s bottom line. There must be a logical explanation?

It’s why Porsche makes the 918.

Why does Rolex make garish watches like Rainbow Daytona?
Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. What is garish to you is spectacular to others.
The Rainbow Daytona and other Master class watches (GMT SARU, Diamond Pearlmasters) are the only truly hand finished models left in the entire Rolex lineup as each diamond is set and placed by master gem setters. Rolex Ethos? No offense, that’s just marketing. Also if Rolex stuck to making “tool” watches in an era where mechanical watches are obsolete instead of evolving to what it is today, they would have faded into obscurity along with other long forgotten names. |

Simply put, there's no accounting for taste.

For the same reason you see models walking the runway during fashion week with outfits suited only for Lady Ga Ga, to push the art form, show they can do something edgy; haute horology, Rolex style

there's a big difference between the rainbow/saru/sabr and aftermarket iced out watches. to you it might be tasteless but to others those are real collectors pieces. those watches elevate rolex to the next class of watches and lets them also compete with the people that are buying RMs

Would Porsche make a 918 wrapped in pink camo and sitting on 26" wheels? That would be the Porsche equivalent of a Leopard Daytona.
I am not saying that only steel "tool watches" are proper Rolex. PM watches with diamonds can look good if tastefully done (i.e. a Daydate with a baguette dial is beautiful). I guess I'm just having a hard time reconciling a conservative watchmaker like Rolex making pieces that are really out there design-wise. |

When I see the word "rapper" used, it sends me a message that implies something that does not sit well with me. You know exactly what I mean.

I think Rolex does it to help separate judgmental people from the rest.

Whether or not any particular watch is “garish” is a matter of personal opinion.
But as to why they make them, the answer is a simple matter of fact: Because people buy them. |

One mans garish is another mans cool.
The sports models with factory set stones are cool for me, I’d be happy to wear any and all. Including the tiger. Those watches are cool and hot at the same time and insanely in demand for good reason. The RBOW is bonkers good.
