My first mod, SKX009
Hi everyone,
I have been collecting watches for many years, I am lucky to own many fantastic watches. However, I am wanting something under the radar for work. I currently have a black bay GMT and black bay 58 which I love, but recently I am wanting a change. I would like something smaller and I have started looking at SKX013 mods. I think this is what I want to do, buy an SKX013, put in a hacking and manual winding movement, customise the dial and bezel etc. Unfortunately I can't find anything less than over £500 for an SKX013, so im looking at an SKX009, which I am worried is a bit bigger than my small wrists can wear but happy to give it a go! Just wanting to know, roughly how much should I be looking to buy all the equipment to do this? I think I have got an inventory here but just wanting advice on anything else I need or have missed: Seiko SKX009 - £309. (I want a new one ideally) Nato Strap - £20 NH36A regulated - £52 Bezel Opener - £8 22mm fat spring bars - £8 Hand remover - £10 Dial protector - £7 Spring bar pliers - £22 NH movement stem - £5 Bergeon 7024 tweezers - £26 Sub Bezel - £31 Chapter ring - £15 Bezel insert- £28 Double Domed Saphire crystal- £33 Mercedes hands- £19 SKX crown - £21 Watch back press - £9 GS hypo cement - £9 TOTAL: £632 Am I roughly correct with my estimates regarding cost and anything else I should consider? Thanks!

At a glance . . . the SKX will already come with 22mm fat bars and you won't need springbar pliers for those, just a tool like the bergeon 6767. You also won't need a caseback press, but you will need a screwdown caseback tool and case holder.

Use a swiss army knife to remove the bezel. You can use it to remove the spring bars. You also need a crown and stem to fit the Nh36. Include some Silicone Grease for the gaskets, and a crystal press with dies.

I’m curious why you are buying a whole new watch to replace the dial, hands, bezel, movement? You’re essentially saving the crown, case, and bezel which can be purchased for less than half of the £309 you’d spend on a new skx.
No need to buy dial protector. Just use some of the plastic baggies that come with the newer parts. Works just fine. Buy some rodico and finger condoms too. |
