1 vote for the Daytona over here. Just personal opinion, but I love everything about the Daytona including its proportions and lettering, and the fact that it does not have a date window. While I like the look of the Royal Oak, I don't care much for the "AUTOMATIC" lettering and the date window. I have the quartz no-date Royal Oak TT from the 70s. If they sold a no-date 41mm version without that "AUTOMATIC," I'd put it on my buy list!

Were I in your position I would go with the AP, it is just such a better look than the Daytona, a step up on the horology ladder, and that bracelet on the AP is just awesome.

Oh, and it looks brilliant on your wrist OP.

AP for sure 100%. I like my Rolexes and the Daytona’s I have owned but the AP is on another level. If you were able to get the 116500 at MSRP, then do it.

I just went through this same dilemma

Ended up with a new 15450

The way I look at it now - if I had gotten the Daytona, I might want to trade it for this watch still. But there’s no way in hell I’d trade AP->Daytona

The finishing and level of integration on the bracelet alone would do it for me. In certain dark light it literally looks otherworldly

Earlier this year, I was tossing between a 15450 at retail or Pepsi at grey (budget around 25-30k AUD).

I went with the RO because I thought it was silly to pay so much for a steel Rolex.

I will some day pick up the Pepsi at retail once the market turns.

Excuse me, but are some of you people insane? The 15450 wears EXACTLY like a 4 or 5 digit sub.

Don't let the 37mm size fool you, the wide lugs make this wear much larger. It's PERFECT for slim wrists.

I had a 15202 but fairly quickly sold it again as it was too big for my 6.3" wrists. The 15450 is the perfect size for sub 6.8" wrists.

The AP.
The reason? Your wrist shot; plus I love Rolex but something special about the AP RO.

You don't care much for the "Automatic" on the AP dial, but you don't mind the:
ROLEX
OYSTER PERPETUAL
SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER
OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED
CHRONOGRAPH

On the Daytona?

39mm and 41mm ROs generally perform well and are sought after on the second hand market. 37mm ROs are available at retail price, and judging from the demand for other smaller models such as the 14790, I think it's fair to expect that the Daytona will keep it's value better, or at least be easier to sell for a decent price, in the future.

Personally I would prefer the Daytona over the 15450, to me it feels more robust and versatile. As much as I love my RO, I end up wearing it only on special occasions due to my fear of making scratches on it.

So many people comment on the size of the 15450 without having seen or worn one.

I think the size is perfect for a 6.5” wrist. I have a blue dial and a silver dial, and they are stunning. My wife tends to wear the silver dial as i prefer the blue. And before anyone says that my wife wearing the silver dial proves that it’s a ladies watch, she also wears a Daytona.

I’ve also had it suggested that i promote the 15450 because i can’t get/afford one of the bigger models! But i also have a 15300, a 15710, and a 26480 so that puts that theory to bed.

If you are a chap with low self esteem and a need to prove your manliness with a large watch, avoid the 15450. If however your good with yourself, the 15450 is perfect for a 6.5” wrist.

In terms of value, hard to say. But the 15450 has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the time I’ve had mine. The blue in particular is now worth twice what i paid for it.

I’m also a Daytona fan and have a 116519, and also bought my wife one, so you won’t find me being critical of you choose that over the AP. But, personally, I find AP to be so much more special.

Some reference pictures to help. I have a 6.5” wrist.

SS Daytona at MSRP is the best buy but it's very hard to get.

15450ST White or Grey dial should be able to get it from the boutique, the waiting shouldn't be that long.

Couldn’t agree with this more! While certainly not for every wrist size, the 15450 is definitely not a ladies watch. It wears much bigger and is comparable in lug to lug size with the D500. Anyone suggesting otherwise simply is incorrect. But my wrist is just a hair over 6”.

Like you, I have the blue 15450 and 116519 (and white D500 as well) and certainly don’t feel the 15450 is too small in comparison. I do, however, find myself wearing the 116519 a lot more...it’s almost my “one watch to rule them all” with its versatility.

Beautiful pics by the way.

The budget for this special occasion is about EUR 22k and the two main contenders are:
- The AP RO 15450st (37mm) silver dial, which I can get at retail from an AD (non-boutique) in the EU; and
- The Rolex 116520 Daytona (steel bezel) with black dial.

I like both watches and would eventually want both in the collection. Due to my smaller wrist I can't swing a larger RO. I also prefer the steel bezel Daytona to the newer ceramic model.

My current collection comprises of a few Rolexes (Hulk, 14060m Submariner and 15200 Date), a Speedmaster and a Tudor BB Harrods (which indeed wears a tad large).

Which of the two options do you prefer? Which would be a better fit with the current collection? Any other suggestions are also welcome!

While I understand that focusing on the "investment" angle of the hobby is seen as a faux pas here, your views on what may perform better in the next few years would also be well appreciated.

Many Thanks!

Hey there, got inspired by your post. Interestingly, have the same dilemma as AP AD in just called me and they have the 15450 in silver/white dial. Knowing your current collection which quite similar to mine. I’ve considered getting the RO 15450.

Although if there’s any, i got a few months ago an AP RO 26315 38mm chrono in grey dial. I’m considering to sell it to make way for the 15450. My wrist size is 6.25 which is rather on the smaller end.

Would appreciate to hear anyone’s thoughts. Thanks!

On another note, my AD mentioned that these would be subject to a 5% price increase from 1 January, at least in the EU.

hey, I'm looking to get a 15450 in blue as well, just wondering if you had a purchase history before acquiring this piece?
