The term that comes to mind when reading some of the many expressions of horror and disgust is... Pharisaical! Oh, wait! Almost forgot to strap on my TT Sea-Dweller this morning, you know, because I plan to take on the scuba diving World Record on Guiness and my TT and PM submariners just do not cut it! |

Rolex had been failing in recent years. The explorer1 are for purists but now is just made into an insignificant luxury item.

I wouldn’t say that I hate the TT Explorer, just that it goes against the principle that the Explorer is the Explorer rather than a range of watches based on a basic design. This is what attracted me to buy one, I did not have to worry about whether I had bought the right option.

Now that ^^^ hits the mark!
In fact, on a black leather strap it would be the bee's knees.

I agree Grady. Too much vitriol over a Rolesor option on an iconic model. Same happened with the SeaDweller before this. I would get it if the “all SS” Explorer was axed. But it’s still there for those who want it. And the unimaginative sexist comments... ...why is it that some knuckledraggers believe that the harshest derogatory commentary is calling new TT models a “lady’s watch”? Not for me and I think it was a step away from what made this watch an icon.

While many of us are drawn to the historic nature of these, the reality is that they are all grossly overpriced jewelry which now have far more capable and less expensive options available to perform their “job”. Might as well make variations of all of them with gold, platinum, diamonds, etc It’s all now high fashion.

Not really into the explorer line, however I like the two tone for the wife. I applaud going to 36, especially in a time when everyone is going bigger.

To each their own, that’s why they offer choices. I personally find anything gold tacky - and anything two-tone the pinnacle of tackiness. Tiger King territory.

I don’t see what the big deal is- most of the other prof lines already have two-tone options.

Adding gold to the Explorer makes no sense to me. It doesn't appeal to me but each to their own! If you like it buy it, if you don't like it don't buy it. End of story.

I don’t like it. I know the Sub has been made with gold for many years and I think it looks fine. However, it just doesn’t look right to me on the Explorer.

the "maxi" texts and spacing of indexes as well as the enlarged 369 irks me more than the two tone or the 19mm bracelet (which i actually think looks good and accentuates the 36 case)
the R O L E X (instead of ROLEX) just takes up too much of the dial space and as other members have stated it as well making the watch less refined/elegant why reduce the size (i like the move but agree would be better to have both 36 and 39 options) when the text/spacing remains identical to that of the 39? to each his own the older 114270, 14270 and even the space dweller looked good because the text were discreet and doesnt have insecurity issues of wanting to be seen. |

Frederico has a chip on his shoulder with Rolex. He constantly rambles about Rolex and o don’t think it would matter what they released. Likely due to the thinner profit margins he makes on them and inability to stock up.

I've never desired anything but SS in a Rolex.
But if background/mythology of an Explorer is significant then adding gold seems counter intuitive |

BASTERDIZED with Gold? - New Explorer Reaction
Quote:
I’m not exactly in the same camp - I’ve had dozens in all metal configs except solid WG. But I do think Rolex under-ran expectations for the Anniversary Explorer with TT. It’s a half-measure... It’s causing more controversy than if it was full Platinum with a sunburst light blue dial. That’s what I want - a $60K Anniversary Explorer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I like it! Just a two tone watch. Just like the SD43. Or the TT Sub. You can accomplish any task with the two tone that you can with all stainless steel. Don't like it? Hate it? Then my advice is, don't buy it! Pretty simple. It now appeals to a broader audience. I applaud Rolex for being innovative. One of the deepest dive watches in TT. Now the famous Explorer. Brilliant!

I can't take that living Pillsbury Dough Boy seriously; don't care if he used to work for a watch company. He's entitled to his opinions as are we all but I just don't see the issue with an TT OP with more legible dial and hands under the Explorer name. I'd been just as happy if they'd called it an OP with improved night time capabilities. Glad he's not in the market for one as a 36mm would likely look like a ladies watch on his corpulent wrist.

I like it, I’m toying with the idea of trading my 16570 towards it. We’ll see.

Actually imho all the Rolex line-up is jewelry regardless of what metal they have. There's no one who's going to buy a Rolex to partake in a specific pastime other than for the sake of showmanship and wearing jewelry. Any belief that the 36mm Explorer is anything more than an OP is poppy cock. It may have different labeling and hands but it's just selling to those who want to feel superior that they're wearing real tool watches. The only difference between the TT and the SS version is price and metal. They both fill the same niche. Expensive jewelry.

I could care less. I have and love my 214270 Mark 1. If Rolex can sell more watches by offering two tone options good on them. It is not like any of us our out there "exploring" with our mid to high 4 digit watches.

I think it's a nice looking luxury watch. I doubt many rock/mountain climbers are wearing ss explorers anymore during climbs. Probably better with a G-Shock. I think the whole "tool watch" image is somewhat gone given prices, availability, and product changes in recent years. And, I don't think Rolex minds at all. Of course, these are my opinions only, so please don't ask for stats...
