Submariner 14060 - tritium or lume?

Hey guys I'm looking to buy a 14060 no date two-liner but can't decide on an older tritium (1990s) or a newer lume (there's a 2017 I found EDIT: Not 2017, it doesn't have the ceramic bezel). What are your thoughts? Will one hold its value more? What are the differences in the case, band, etc? (Another edit: I'm buying to wear, not to flip)

As for value, no one knows. I have a tritium 16610 gifted to me in 1998 or so. From the functional standpoint, I wish it glows, and it no longer does. Unlike most here, I wear and use my watches all the time, so its an issue. Ill never replace it due to the meaning the watch has for me. The watch is very different from the 90's compared to the 2017 versions, giant lugs, ceramics, solid end links-no functional improvement though just cosmetics. The 2017 version is just a flashier and bloated version of the older sub's from the 90's and that's not desirable to my eyes.

However, the purpose of a watch is to be worn and tell the time. If you are simply another investor here looking for advice, Im no expert but tritium seems to more desirable and given you will likely keep it in a safe for a while and flip it, the lume has no real value to you. You may make some money too who knows, but you will simply have another investment with no meaning at all. Buy what you like, wear it, given its a rolex it will likely at least hold value and may go up, but it will have meaning.

I have a 16610 with Tritium and the glow died years ago. I wear it all the time and many, many times I've wished for the glow. I'd never give mine up, but if I didn't currently have one and I had a chance to get one with working lume I'd probably go for it.

I love the look of patina on lume. But I can live with the lume on the 4 liner 14060M

All 14060 will have the cal 3000 movement from around 1990 to appox 2000, all 14060M will have the cal 3130 movement the M stands for modified movement. Some 14060M with have certified chronometer on dial, but both cal 3000 and cal 3130 are exactly the same movements that was tested at COSC. Why has everything around Rolex watches today come down to ££££$$$€€€ or perceived collectability, what's wrong with buying the watch you want to own and wear. All ceramic bezel versions will be 114060 with basically the same case as the Sub date 116610, as to the lume early 14060 had Tritium lume which had a half life of around 12 years so most will have little or no glow. So if you want lume glow buy a 14060M and will add some late 14060 around 1998/99 possible into early 2000 had Luminover dials.

The last Submariner before the ceramic revolution. It is a good choice .

Tritium or luminova no problem, I would choose a healthy and unpolished Sub better if recently serviced

As said above which one is in better shape?

I also own a 16610 (S serial, bought new on Jan 1995) with tritium; no glow neither but wouldn’t change the beautiful patina on the line or
pimp for some glow. This thread needs some pictures!

I’d only get the 14060 if Tritium is really important to you. If not then get the two line 14060m instead. It looks the same but it has the more modern movement.

Despite what you read on here and various other forums it is not just a “modified” 3000, the 3130 inside of the 14060m is a COMPLETELY different movement, not necessarily better (although I prefer it) but it is more modern.

My choice is 14060M 2 liner - newer movement and lume, no engraved rehaut and a holes case.

Biased, but I don't think you can beat a Tritium 2 line

If you are going to wear it this is the way to go. I have a 1998 sub date and appreciate having the lume.

Condition, condition, condition. Those are the three words you need to remember. The rest (in my opinion) are just minor preferences.

I would also say don’t be afraid to pay top dollar or even over the odds for a great piece. You will ultimately get what you pay for.
