Can I "daily" a Datograph?

I'm caught up in the Datograph hype. I want one. But I want to wear it. Deep diving into the internet forums and reviews, it's often a collectors dream until they own it, then they find it unwearable, uncomfortable, etc.

If I ride my bike to the office, wear it all day, and ride my bike home, perhaps go to a restaurant for dinner, is it nuts? Can it take it? I think it can? Interested to hear opinions, especially from current and former owners.

Thanks!

Don't know about riding a bike with any $$$ watch as shock will mess them up but I wore my Zeitwerk as a daily for a while with no issues. I imagine you can do the same with a Dato...

Did you sell the ZW?

I seem to come across many stories from Lange owners along the lines of "It was a great watch, loved it, no issues, and then I sold it and moved on"

Wear my Dato 403 platinum everyday... along with others. Working from home everyday provides this odd environment when you can do that.

That being said I have taken it on leisure hikes etc. Depending on riding conditions I would hesitate to take it on a bike ride but I am not confident rider .

From what I read, people found it heavy/dense due to its precious metal case and often a couple mm thicker than others. Some solve that with a deployant clasp, but I have been fine with a buckle.

Note that the newer one is 2mm bigger and comes with a longer power reserve. While bigger but nominally the same thickness, some would say the aspect ratio of the watch case is better like the 1815 Chrono. I don’t mind the Oreo cookie aspect ratio of the original and prefer the older dial, but both have its merits! Enjoy!!!!

The only time I purposely take off the watch is when I have to wash the dishes or do something water related. I don’t worry about washing hands with it, that is more of a strap issue. I am looking for a more casual strap that is more water resistant and allow the watch wear better with a short sleeve.

I even wear the watch upside down as well . If I really need to know the time I will look at my phone LOL.

I wear my Dato U/D several days a week. It’s in a rotation so when I’m not wearing it, it’s to give the others a little daylight.

It’s arguably in the top two best dress watches I’ve owned to date. I can’t say enough good things about the watch. I enjoy the robustness as well as the fit and finish of the watch. It’s substantial. It’s sporty. And it’s a dress watch. It’s all-in-one.

I bought mine with a platinum deployant and have had no issues with comfort. In fact, it’s very comfortable to wear. I know it’s on the wrist due to it’s weight (which I love - platinum for the win!), but the weight is well distributed given the case size. But make no mistake, this watch wears smaller than 41mm due to its perfectly sized dial and bold yet elegant bezel. And lug to lug, it is no issue whatsoever.

Check out my review of this watch in this subforum for more feedback.

I recommend this watch without reservation.

For a size comparison, here’s a side by side with a 40mm Optimum.

The only “gotcha” with the OG Dato is 36hr PR. While this can be turned to a “positive” by interacting with the watch on a daily basis ...

Now langepedia made an observant statement that when the PR is less than 48 hours, you cannot go away for the weekend for the watch to get off time.

The Dato has a quick set button for the date so there is an excuse to use that .

Let us know what you decide!

You can absolutely daily wear a Dato...for weeks straight I wore my dato perpetual tourbillon and still wear it several times a week.

I was always a bit hesitant getting a 39mm due to the described heftiness and went for 1815 Chrono instead, also given my comparably small wrist. I got one now since some days and have to admit you can easily wear it and it fits very nicely on the wrist. You might only need to change the OEM strap with a thinner, more flexible one.

Ive dailyed mine for the past 2 years so far no complaints whats so ever, if you feel the strap and watch combo is too top heavy pair it with a deployant buckel or get a Hirsh performance strap

You certainly can wear it everyday. I see loads of people wearing a 44mm AP offshores or huge Panerais every single day with no issues. Not sure why you think the Dato will be different?

It’s a big heavy watch, just a personal preference.

You will have some more wear and tear, especially with a leather strap, but you can always buy new straps and Lange has very good service if and when you need it.

Personally, I’ve broken my Rolex crystal twice, and pretty much destroyed the movement on a JLC master control in the course of daily activities, like bike riding working around the house. I’ve started to keep my nicer watches off while doing those activities, and just wear them more gently.

For sure. Who the heck cares worst case you crash the bike and lose 10k fixing the watch. Most likely not going to happen and you’ll be cool as a cucumber.

Hi I bought the OG DATO 403.035 last September and its the watch Ive been using the most, i dont take for any physical activities but I wear without problem to other activities of my daily life. I use it with the clasp and the watch has a lot of heft.
I also like the 36 hour power reserve I see it as a way to interact with the watch and setting the date is easy not like for example the 15202. I hope this helps

Buy it, wear it, enjoy it, and don't baby it. In my top photo below, between the 46 and 47 minute markers, you can see a nice dent in the bezel. Who cares, though? Not me. When I had Lange regulate the watch, I told them not to laser-fill that dent or polish any part the watch, though Lange would've gladly made it look like new if I had wanted that.

Langes are very robust. Hiking, biking, and water exposure are fine, though of course I wouldn't intentionally submerge it or subject it to legitimately major impacts/shocks (same as with any other pricey watch). As far as comfort goes, I wore it on a strap and now on a bracelet without issue. It felt fine on my small 6" wrist all day long with the strap (though mine is gold, not platinum, so it'd be lighter than yours). I always prefer a Lange deployant buckle when I wore it on a strap, though plenty of people stick with the tang buckle.

I've always thought it a very special piece so I would wear it in rotation and not in reckless situations.

Yes, I did it for two years or so. It was the Up/Down. It’s a very easy wear, at least in platinum. And for a daily watch it’s actually pretty nice to have a date (positioned properly, central to the design and not some afterthought).

Go for it.

Depends on the wrist imo.

the 403. series feels a bit less balanced than the 405. series for me. As mentioned in couple of places, it feels top heavy unless you have a platinum deployant to balance it out.

Wear it, enjoy it while biking, no problems. I believe that's how Blümlein tested the watch in the first place :)
Though I'd advise you to adjust your expectations accordingly. It is going to make itself felt, make itself present. But, with such beauty, in a delightful way.

I think the secret to actually wearing your Lange is purchasing the thinner cases. Love the Dato and the Zeitwerk, but to daily, a Timezone is a better option in my view (even that requires a large wrist)
