Two tone your first choice? Be honest.
Ok, trying to get a sense of who actually bought a two tone model because it was their absolute first choice? Not because it was what they could get quicker or easier? I’m talking true first choice. Zero settling.
I’m saying “be honest” because I think it’s a tough question to answer given how hard it’s been to acquire SS and pure PM. And I think many have been steered to (or slowly came to) TT just to get in the game. This isn’t intended to be a knock on TT, not at all. There are plenty of lovely ones, and this forum has shown me how wildly tastes can vary. But my hypothesis is that a very large percentage of two tone sales come as a result of not being able to get the buyers true first choice. So I assume it’s an effective Rolex sales and marketing strategy. (I see a lot of TT featured in their advertising.) Availability and secondary market pricing would say I’m probably right. But since you’re all out there, let me know. Full disclosure, I bought a TT CHNR when it first came out even though it wasn’t the watch I initially inquired about. It was beautiful, I enjoyed it for a while, but I didn’t really wear it, and ultimately sold it. I know that reference is a first choice for many, so expecting to see it mentioned a lot. That, and the “bluesy” appear to be standouts in this regard? Anyway, thanks for playing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Because I absolutely love the dial on that watch. There was no other watch I wanted at the time. I didn’t go looking for it in 2014, I found an AD with the older flat blue dial and one with the sunburst. Tried them on side by side, loved the sunburst. Bought it. People definitely shouldn’t buy these watches if they don’t want them or want something else they can’t get more. It’s an insane amount of money to do that. 6 years on or whatever, still looks majestic and wouldn’t be without it. |

I brought a brand new bluesy back in 2015 when almost all SS sport models were available, most w discount at grey.
Not sure if it counts |

I've never purchased a two tone Rolex because when I was building my collection they were too expensive. I did purchase a two tone Navitimer back in 2009 because I loved the way it looked and the gold was limited to the bezel and subdials.
My father's Rolex is a black dial two tone Submariner. All I can say is that unless you see Rolex precious metal in person, you cannot really appreciate it. Pictures just do not do justice. A surgeon I worked with had a two tone GMT-Master II with the black dial/bezel and green GMT hand. It looked amazing in person. |

Anymore; they are preferred. It used to be I tied into the forum hype on SS models; not any more. I prefer the best looking watches I can find and find the TTs have the best appearance, imho.

Nope I knew nothing about watches when I bought my first Rolex and bought a tt because I loved it. Just ordered another one, and I wore a tt sub for a very long time and recently sold it. I also own full gold pieces and more often reach for two tone.

the two-tone bluesy won my heart the first time i saw it, and it was my first rolex, btw. it was truly love at first sight, i've never understood how some people tend to find two-tone so offputting, at least with rolex. i think they're magnificent.

I did! It was 2006; using my salesman of the year bonus from my first “real job” out of college, I was finally able to buy a Rolex. I’d always wanted that “blue faced one”. Living in Dallas, there were plenty of ADs to choose from. But I had a friend who knew of a little AD in Oklahoma that gave good discounts, so I called them and bought a 16613. I think I paid about $5600 out the door. They shipped it to me the next day. Proud moment.
Fast forward about 7 years, and I’ve got a gun stuck in my belly in broad daylight and I’m handing over my wedding ring and watch to a guy dressed in a business suit on the corner of Calle 72 and séptima in Bogota. On the bright side, insurance paid me more than Is paid for the watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Honestly, I didn't feel like buying a TT when I started this hobby, a bit more than 15 years ago. It didn't even cross my mind. Reasons were TT was above my budget at the time and also personal taste, I wasn't much of a TT fan back then.
Two years ago however, I started to develop a strong interest in TT. I considered a TT DJ and a Sub, the blue dial Sub especially. Last year I pulled the trigger on the 126613lb and I'm so glad I did. It is a step into flashy territory, I won't deny it. It's my third Rolex, after two sports steel pieces. For me it was a natural progression. When trying on the Bluesy at the AD, I was gobsmacked. It looked and felt amazing. When I wear it I get a shot of instant gratification. Given the new situation with steel, one could skip Rolex steel as long as one is ready for the extra bling. You shouldn't settle, I think you really have to want that look. Worst case scenario, you try TT and if it turns out it's not for you in the end, you just let it go. No big deal. For me, TT could totally replace steel. It's the best of both worlds between sports steel and sports PM, mixes the ruggedness of a steel case with the fancy looks of gold adornments. It could be your only Rolex in fact if you're ready for it. |

Not anymore. I had 126613 for a few months and kept loving and hating it.
Love it because it’s nice, hate it because it’s not 126618. I will never say things like you buy it because you can’t get SS or are too poor for PM, because that’s not true. However I find that I just don’t like the clashing tones, and the bracelet has this one big yellow line that I didn’t like. HOWEVER, I find some model work best in TT, but the are not sport models. |

I would hands down take a TT CHNR over a BLNR or Steel BLRO. The chnr would be my first choice in a GMT. Hard to say what I would do in the submariner though. Kinda like steel subs .

I bought a 16613 because it was the same price as a 16610 at the time.
It got me obsessed with Gold and now I own a 18038 and 16628 but no two-tone anymore....

Wasn’t my first “purchase,” but my first Rolex was a TT GMT-Master — the original root beer. When I first received it, I actually didn’t love it, but hey—it was a Rolex. It has seriously grown on me over time given the relative scarcity of unique dial colors among Subs/GMTs/Daytonas.
I think TT watches do not get the respect they deserve. Some are quite ugly, but many are really beautiful, and I often find them to be a lot classier than an in-your-face full gold or full rose gold reference. (On the latter point, I think this is why I will likely go the WG route when I decide on a PM piece — just not sure I’d feel comfortable wearing full gold.) |

I looked past the TT CHNR when it launched because I only had eyes for the BLRO. But when I saw the CHNR in person it was stunning. I lost interest in the BLRO but have since climbed onto my AD's waiting list because it will compliment my CHNR nicely, and it's now on Oyster. If I had to pick one GMT Master to own, it would be the CHNR.
My three favourite Rolex models are the 11 series Sub Date, Sky Dweller and GMT Master. I have SS and TT siblings of all except the GMT. Much as I love my 116610LV, if I had to standardise, it would be the 116613LB. The Bluesy is just so nicely proportioned both visually and materially. I couldn't pick between my Sky Dwellers. And I don't really want to pick between any of them. I've got to really love a watch to buy it and once I have it I aim to keep it. The SS versus TT asthenic, feel and weight is such that for me, they may as well be different models. |

The only TTs I like and prefer over full gold are the ceramic bluesy and rootbeer

I picked up my TT Daytona (116503-0009) because I had always said to myself that I would buy any Daytona that came my way.
I’ve come to love it, though, and was happily surprised when it was recently discontinued. So I’d recommend not ruling out a TT until you see it in person. You may be converted like I was. Cheers! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I wear a TT DJ41 (champagne) daily. My only Rolex. I'd have a DD, but I can't really swing it, responsibly, at least.
I love the gold, and the TT offers a good hunk of it, as well what I feel is a timeless look. |

Two-tone DJ 41 - the perfect watch.
Maybe, just maybe, your own bias is showing? That would be human-like after all. |

readily admit my bias. while i find many TTs very beautiful, after some trial and error, i've determined they are not for me. i prefer the look of SS and WG. i also like rose and yellow gold, but usually in smaller doses (on a rubber strap for example.) i am mostly intrigued by the impact of market forces and advertising on the buying process and the "human-like" psychology of it all.

some watch looks great in TT, some no so much.
but when SS becomes more rare than clean low mileage Integra GSR, people will "settle for" TT even if its not their "first choice". Great for Rolex sales. :) To me, no, I would go for SS over TT. I am just not "TT kinda guy".

Bought TT at one point because they were cheaper than SS and more available. Never could bond with the two color metal configuration. Sold them all. Now stick to SS and full PM.

I'll admit I bought my 116503 black dial Daytona because I couldn't get a steel one at retail. I still like the watch (or I wouldn't have bought it), I don't have any regrets, and I'm not constantly thinking about getting a steel version...so I guess it's mission accomplished?

My first was the GMT LN in 2013. Probably would go TT if I had to do it again. Gold is more fun and adds a splash of color. Probably would get the TT black GMT or TT black sub back in 2013.
