But Rolex isn't fundamentally just a soft luxury that's going to depreciate within most people's time horizon. It's more of a dry-powder asset that can be liquidated quickly and has an upside to appreciate rather nicely.

I'd say if you're a huge enthusiast, don't be afraid to go outside of that net worth ratio if you're not carrying major debt.
I appreciate your input and for you actually entertaining the financial side of the question.

While I agree on Rolex being one of the safer alternative assets, the market is awfully high if you're buying grey and is likely to have short term fluctuations or plateaus. Long term one should be happy if they beat or keep up with inflation.

So even as great as they may be, for portfolio diversification any instrument above 10% is not advisable. But to your point if they truly enjoy the product or have a business around it, then the allocation can be higher.

I though I’d only buy one, but then I bought another, and another, and another and so on. What started as a ‘wearable investment” continues into a mini passion, albeit much smaller than many here.
My problem now is this...I always thought that I could pass these off to my nieces and nephews as heirlooms (I don’t have children). They are all now young adults and I’m quite sure they would sell them the second they came into their possession. I should not have been so presumptuous to think that they would share my enjoyment of the watches. I feel I’m now somewhat pressured into looking at them as investments (I’m feeling Padi’s cringe here) and, as much as I hate to think it, liquid assets. I’ve never sold a piece and don’t really want to but pragmatism is rearing it’s ugly head and I’m thinking selling two or three will give my wife and I a couple of extra vacations. First world problems, I know.

Quite frankly, in the early 80’s I didn’t even know what “horology” meant.

I am at 5 and getting bored. After 6 I don’t think I’ll be looking for any more Rolex

Technically one is enough , but for not us. I think like Sport Model + whatever rock your boat = 2 is perfect. It also leave a room for some other brands to be considered.
