Auction results Platona vs JM green dial Daytona

Results at Sothebys Hong Kong yesterday.
Green dial YG Daytona estimated at HKD 500,000-700,000 sold for HKD 756,000 or USD 97,000.
Platinum Daytona with regular dial estimated at HKD 450,000-600,000 sold for HKD 1,071,000 or USD 137,700.

Interesting that the Platona triumped the JM Daytona with a big margin in the end.

I'm assuming that includes the 25% auction fee.

Which means the green Daytona has been stuck in the mid-$70K range for six months now.

For the record, these prices include Sotheby's premium but exclude tax.

Both watches were purchased in 2019. The platona was described as 'never been worn' -

No surprise at all. White metal, be it SS or PM is what everyone wants.

MSRP of Platinum Daytona is more than 2x YG Daytona Green dial.

Platinum Daytona sold for 137.70K was less than 2x of YG Daytona green dial of 97k, so the premium (%) of YG Daytona is higher than Platinum Daytona.

It's no surprise at all that Platinum Daytona sold for higher than YG Daytona green dial.

Why would someone pay $97K USD for a green dial Daytona when you can pick one up for $10K less pretty easily?

Isn't there that infamous thread with the owner of a stolen watch that had trouble getting it back from auction house? Or is my memory off?

Why are watches going to an auction house when you can get one from a reputable grey for much less without a bidding war? PR stunt perhaps?

a) you can get really good deals from Auctions if you're in the right place at the right time.
b) see above - reassurance not fake or stolen (I accept that's not a problem with the best Greys but may be with others).
c) if you want to launder money (probably the main reason prices are so high at some auctions).

It seems like the "common" watches sold at auction (white SS Daytonas, blue 5711s, etc.) go for crazy money. I can see buying a unique watch at an auction because you aren't going to find it elsewhere until some big muckety muck decides to sell off his collection, but buying non-rare watches like a platinum Daytona or gold/green one at a major auction seems like the best way to pay too much. Perhaps it is good for laundering money (as suggested) or a way to orchestrate hype for a watch?

There’s no sales tax in Hong Kong.

d) also used to pay a bride - similar to C

becuase they are about to be higher than 97000 from greys. Davidsw sold one for 88500 in a day this week. These will be 200k in a few years.

Some people with lots of money go to Auctions as a day out or a fun activity, people that have really done their research wouldn't have paid that much

Both way above current market value. Do people not look to see what these are selling for elsewhere?

Sounds like, I’m terms of dollars instead of percents, the two are selling for roughly the same premium above list.
