5905P-001 as next AC?
Recently sold my 5146G, which left a bit of a hole in my collection for a good suit and tie watch. I was thinking 5205G-13, but I'm unsure about it, and now came across a 5905P at the AD. I'm usually game for a spontaneous buy, but it is a bit more $ than I was originally thinking...
1. I have big wrists, 42mm works well. 2. Haven't been historically into chronos, and not sure where exactly i will use it, but it would be a different. 3. Platinum is enticing for some reason. I don't have any watches in platinum and it is definitely driving my interest along with the amazing blue dial and matte blue strap. 4. PC is interesting but not hugely important to me either so likely not worth the additional cost. 5. I like the 5205G-13 but not sure it's really calling my name for some reason. 6. I could wait and see what else PP comes out with for ACs but that's a crap shoot and then some. It really wasn't on my radar but after looking at it I can see myself wearing it most days to work (rather than 5524 or 5711) along with my 5712R, which I like to wear for the RG/brown combo. It would definitely be the most expensive piece I've "paid" so don't want to make a mistake. Thoughts? |

I personally like the 5205G-13 over the 5905P, the design of the dial with the moon phase and the blue looks much more attractive over the chorograph.
The 5205G is reportedly much thinner, at 9.8mm vs 14 for the 5905P. The thinner ref. will be much more comfortable to wear and less prone to dings. Besides with the near 30k difference in price you could get a respectable chronograph as well |

That said, they have some beautiful aspects (the moonphase and general dial layout on the 5205 and the similar layout and sunburst dial on the 5905). In neither case could I get past their thickness and moved them on to happier homes and found more appropriate replacements (for me), with the initials ALS. It is somewhat ironic that I traded these two Patek's (a brand which generally features thinner cases, more sculpted lugs, etc) towards ALS pieces (a brand which is often criticized for having thicker cases), but these two Pateks are exceptionally thick for their relative case diameters. I still miss them occasionally but for me this was not something I got used to and eventually I moved them along. |

Patek lists the thickness of the 5205 at 11.36mm
https://www.patek.com/en/collection/...ions/5205G-013 The 5905 is listed as 14.03mm thick https://www.patek.com/en/collection/...ions/5905P-001 If you are paying this much for a watch, I would try the watch on your wrist and see how it feels on your wrist. If you AD has one in stock, try it on for size. The 5905 is not only a larger watch at 42mm, it is a thick watch. It is thicker than the 5270 Perpetual Calendar Chrono. This is because Patek's automatic chrono movement is thicker than their manual chrono movement. I prefer my "thinner" 5270 over the "thicker" 5905. Also Patek is well known for the PCCs, whereas their ACCs are relatively new. Platinum Patek watches are definitely special watches and deserve a place in any serious Patek watch collection. |

Thanks. My big wrists are limiting too (anything under 39 looks odd on my wrist). For some reason this one makes me feel a bit more grown up. Seems more serious than my other PP references - at least that’s how it feels. Like the heft and tone of the plat.
