This is true. Thieves rarely steal a purple car.
Seriously though, he's right, it's not a fair analogy.

Like encountering a bear in the woods. Just make sure you are faster than the person next to you.

We're at that point in time when if you decide to wear a Rolex, you've put yourself out as a target. I'm not suggesting that you will get mugged. You are simply an owner of an item that other people want. Muggings are no longer just random. They are targeted and often perpetrated by organized crime. Be very careful when dining at high-end establishments. The valet, barkeep, maitre d' and other staff may not be your friend. It's quite easy to take a snapshot of your watch and text it along with your description to cohorts waiting elsewhere. Just keep in mind, you are wearing something that other people want and can easily be fenced.

Great point, I completely agree with this. For many many years I have worn high end watched and they have, for the most part, gone unnoticed. Now everyone seems to know what these watches look like and are aware of their "value." Thanks Instagram

When out of the country I don’t bring any PM pieces. Although insured, I don’t want to go thru the claim process. I don’t want to be robbed either. I could see myself getting hurt because I won’t hand over my watch. My family also feels uneasy at times with me having $$$ on my wrist. I have my concealed permit and it relieves some stress, but also ads some as well. There’s no real solution other than do what makes you feel the safest.
I purchased a replica that I wear when out of the country. It still gives me the pleasure of wearing something I like to look at while being a throw away. I know that’s blasphemy to say here. |

I live in SF as well and won't wear my PM watches or ones that can't be replaced while walking around.

Other than that the watch has remained under the radar. Watch stores are a different story of course. When I picked up my Mark XV at the IWC Boutique today the SA quickly commented on the Nautilus. |

Never been concerned before, but the prices lately of some of my watches has got me thinking again and that takes the fun out of it - this was quite the select hobby when I joined the forum but it has gone so the opposite now, so that now you can't buy the watches you want and can't wear the ones you do. Doesn't really feel like the same hobby any more.

Seriously, 99.99999% of people don’t look at your watches or care about them. Relax.

I don’t mean this to be political but…
so many of our local/federal governments are turning a blind eye to this illegal activity making crooks more brazen and incidences more common. It’s a shame that society has become dramatically less “civil” in the last (approximately) 2 years. While there has always been muggings, this was not a common topic of this forum two years ago. The 3 things common criminals are trying to steal via burglary or robbery
1: guns out of your unlocked car 2: drugs if you're known to have drugs 3: your wallet and jewelry if you look rich *they recognize Rolex cyclops/AP Royal Oaks mostly. Or they will look at your attire and assume your watch is fancy also. So yea wearing a Cyclops or identifiable Rolex will make you more of a target than an average Joe. Get them insured, be aware of your surroundings, be okay with a small risk that someone might just hit you with a brick and steal your stuff and run away someday. |

Just tailor the wartch to your surroundings. Nice restauraunt with no outside walk to get there - wear whatever you want. Going to a major sporting event having to walk miles in big crowds for me it's Tudor / Grand Seiko tops although you could probably wear a ALS Odysseus or FPJ Octa S without anyone batting an eyelid.
