If you had to choose...Vintage Rolly or PP
Hi all -
I've been searching for a while for my next big piece and it so happens that I'm getting the vintage itch. What I'm struggling is to no surprise scarcity, authenticity, and reliable price information. I've seen the Who's Who and a couple threads on authenticity so that's less of my concern. In a collection of Cartier Tank (the classic quartz on leather strap), 14060M Sub (the one and only Rolex, trustworthy, reliable and rugged), and a sentimental Tag Heuer (Quartz Kirium) gifted to me on my graduation, I am stuck choosing between: a) Patek Philippe World Time 5110G b) Rolex 16018 DateJust Onyx/Tiger Eye or Rolex 18038 Day-Date Black Onyx I know all three very different watches and hard to compare. But as any one of these are big financial commitments, welcome any and all opinions. The motive is not purely financial (obviously at the bare min of $30k+ I'd hope they hold value), but also a few other drivers below. The Patek offers a holy trinity to add to the collection (Patek's brand name itself speaks to the amazing craftsmanship and ingenuity), introduces a complication that while isn't as practical as it suggests due to daylight savings time across 24 different time zones, has the novelty and genius mechanical feat that Louis Cottier realized into the modern-day World Time series. On the other wrist are the vintage Rolex choices that rarely come with papers or box, but through the right dealer can offer a really classy, unique timepiece. I'm especially in love with the jubilee hidden clasp and the exotic dial reference. Having a natural stone dial was rare and really offers something new than what one would traditionally associate with Rolex. It would also be a full 18k gold watch, which has upside (precious metal value) and downside (I'm not sure in these days how often people go walking around with a solid gold watch in public vs. the World Time is far more unassuming). Any thoughts on which one given the above? |

It depends on what you like. I have no interest in ever owning a Patek or buying anything other than Rolex watches so not really a question for me. You may have a different preference.

This is the Rolex Forum. I'll stick with Rolex. Have yet to see the appeal of Patek.

Surely it’s a Patty if the other one’s a Rolly!

Patek for me, but not a World Time.
This one, for ultimate minimalism. (Photo credit HQ Milton) It's so simple it doesn't even have a second hand. Might also try it on a steel shark bracelet when I don't feel like wearing leather. You can't get any more under the radar than this. |

I'd take a 5196 over all of them and save the money vs a 5110.

That's not a bad idea at all. Modern reliability with a vintage feel, and a good size at 37 mm.

Is Rolly some kind of kid's cereal? In that case - Patek.

I like the DD 18038 best but would go for a 18238 instead. The quick set is so convenient
