1957 Rolex 6564? Why doesn't Serial make Sense?
I have what looks to me like a 1957 Rolex Oyster Perpetual model 6564. The serial number on the watch as shown in the attached photo is "82576". This doesn't seem to match the serial number/year registries I've found online (Bob's Watches, etc.).
What am I missing? Is this really a 1957 watch? Anything particularly interesting about this watch? Immense thanks in advance! |

That number would put it in the very early 60's if it had another digit. If so, the caseback should be stamped inside with a date code.

Please double-check, is the serial number 5-digits or 6-digits? You posted a 5-digit number. Or better yet, post a photo to avoid confusion.

That five digit serial number would place it in the early 1940s. Which makes no sense.

Dan, I don’t think so. That would require 6 digits, yes.

It’s a 1954. Rolex reset numbers at the end of 1953, so were back to 5 digits in 1954 then by 1955 it was up at six figures again.
That linked table is misleading by using 999999 for 1954 Edit- I assume the table is suggesting the serial started 1954 at 999999 and then reset during 1954 |

Bobs says likewise:
https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-se...39%20or%201954 Suggests that 1954 started at 23000 and ended at 97000 |

I would assume 1955 would be a better choice, but we are dealing with Rolex....
I have seen sub 100K numbers with 1954 and 1955 casebacks. Here are a couple of example: 1) 6352 w/ 67,xxx serial - case back 1/54 2) 6286 w/ 80,xxx serial - case back 1/55 |

Why? It’s an easy to use tool, offers as much accuracy as that linked table from here and shares a lot of DNA with that table and other serial number calculators online. Certainly more accurate than the suggestions of 1957, early 1940s or 1960s!
Anyway, here’s a nice 1954 6285 with box, papers and dated chrono certificate with 869xx and q3 54 caseback https://www.vintagewinders.co.uk/pro...-papers-vw899/ |
