2022: The year of PM

Market prices of popular SS references are now approaching (and in some cases exceeding) the retail price of their PM siblings. It would be wise for rolex to capture some of this value, but how? Increasing supply and/or retail prices to match the demand for specific models would be short sighted. It seems like a good time to focus on building out the PM catalogue, making it a higher percentage of their overall offering, and limit the expanding of SS configurations.

Let’s look at the GMT line for example. Why release a SS Coke when they can release a YG rootbeer or Concorde GMT? We saw gold work it’s way into the explorer line last year. Will we see a full gold explorer or TT explorer II this year? How about a rose gold submariner?

I believe this year’s Rolex releases will be dominated by PM variants.

Your theory is about 12 months late to this party

This has idea has been batted around for quite a while now, hence the increase in PM Daytona and TT references as well as the rumored RG Sub

If they do release a Coke GMT this year, I'll bet its white gold

Hopefully not. Perish the though of your suggestions, they sound dreadfully tasteless.

Yes. 12-18 months ago it was closer than I can remember but now the PM end of the market has gone bonkers.

And the ensuing collective hysteria on this forum will provide outstanding entertainment

I agree with the previous posters, though I still see the current SS bubble - yeah I said it - as a great justification for buying PM models. I'm hoping for an updated Roman numerals dial on 36 Day-Dates this year myself. Same numerals as on the 40mm DDs - would order one in a heartbeat.

Well Rolex argued the high cost of the BLRO bezel was why they initially made it in WG to mass disappointment and anger, but that argument will not apply to the one primary coloured Coke so they could make that in SS.

And if they stick to their conservative old philosophy they will do so, but if the last few crazy years have had an influence on them then I can see them issuing it in PM. This could be a significant signifier of where and what Rolex are right now.
