Help Please......
Hi guys,
Sorry to be a pain but I was wondering if anyone can assist me (and yes I did do a search) I have a Panerai and on the back of the watch it has the following; OP6574 BB1066007 E351/500 (edition number I assume) My questions are –is it a Pam 171? is it a good watch, collectable etc…or should I get rid of it??? If so what would it be worth i.e. price range? I am also interested to know about the quality of the movement? My last question is – I am considering purchasing PAM 275 (and yes I do have one waiting for me at an AD) is this a good watch/investment? Or do I leave it for something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

We can't really tell which model number from those numbers. Only OP can with their database, that's why pictures is needed! |

124 Luminor Power Reserve - OP6574 If that is your watch only 500 were ever made in that year "E-2002" only. How did you come about having a watch that you don't know how much it costs?

Oh and if that isn't your watch, then sorry, you most likely have a bad replica. The only other E series watches that have a production of 500 are below. And since you think you have 171, I'm guessing you have a Luminor case. The only Luminor case other than the one above is the 140 which is gold.
140 Luminor Marina Automatic - Gold Case OP6580 87 Luminor Submersible 1000m 106 Luminor Submersible 98 Radiomir GMT 103 Radiomir 141 Radiomir

Hi guys,
I will post a picture asap but first I will read how to do it. MFER you are correct that is my watch. I purchased the watch years ago from a very reputable shop in Ginza Tokyo so I am sure it is real. Panerai were not very popular when I purchased it and I never really considered the price as I thought it was a hot watch (I was not really into watches when I bought it). However I do think it was in the vicinity of $12-15,000 Australian dollars. So coming back to my original questions… is it a good watch, collectable etc…or should I get rid of it??? If so what would it now be worth i.e. current price range given condition and the fact that it was serviced by Panerai last year (expensive)? I am also interested to know about the quality of the movement? My last question is – I am considering purchasing PAM 275 (and yes I do have one waiting for me at an AD) is this a good watch/investment? Or do I leave it for something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

your watch cannot be PAM171 since it is an F model onward (2003+) while yours is E (2002)
in 2002 (E Series) there were the following limited editions Pam156 (300off) - Pam105 (55off) - PAm108 (100off) - sealan PAM152 to 155 (100off) - Pam76 (300off) and the famous luminor 1950 pam127 (1950off). The Luminor 124 above which i believe is your watch because of the look and the year (E 2002). and the case number OP65xx. there were 40mm that year with the same look (PAM126) but i believe 1500 of these were made this year but i am not sure, better to measure your watch to make sure it is PAM124 not PAM126 if your watch is 124 it is better to keep because although it is not limited edition it is close enough and pretty rare. The PAM124 is the original incarnation of the 44mm power reserve on bracelet. This watch features an all brushed/completely matte finish on case, bezel, entire bracelet and even crown protector. This watch was only made for 2 production years (E and F series) in only 500 pieces for each production. This watch was discontinued after being produced in very limited quantities for only 2 production years (E and F series--500 pieces each year), and replaced in the Panerai catalog with the PAM171. For all intents and purposes, the PAM124 and PAM171 are identical in terms of their materials; both watches are made with a 44mm brushed titanium case, stainless steel bezel and alternating stainless and titanium bracelet. What separates the 2 watches from one another and what makes the PAM124 so unique (and in my opinion, so damn gorgeous) is that all the stainless steel parts on the PAM124 (bezel, crown protector, Stainless Steel links on bracelet) are brushed to a matte satin finish. There are no shiny parts whatsoever on the PAM124. In contrast, all stainless steel pieces on the PAM171 are brought to a high polish/shiny finish. Panerai no longer makes an all brushed 44mm stainless and titanium bracelet model watch, although the PAM171 is still currently featured in the Panerai catalog. excuse a bit of plajurism there but i think this should be conclusive to your search. the last recorded sale of the 124 that i was able to find was 5500usd over two years ago.. i can only suspect that it is an upward trend from then. regarding the 275.. i think it is too expensive and it is not a limited edition. the chronos generally do not make a diffrence (in my opinion) to the appreciation price, only to the original price, the history, the desirability and the limited quantity make a watch a good investment. and i do not think that the 275 fits these.. look at older watches for that that started to go above the rrp price, the price can only go upward once it starts. i hope i was helpful there. |

oh.. i found a good price guidance...
this is a 126 F series (2003) 2100off for sale at 7000usd... http://cgi.ebay.com/PANERAI-PAM-126-...3%3A1|294%3A50 yours should around 10000usd by now.. when yours was launched in 2002 it was 5500usd as for the movement it is a modified VALJOUX OP IX The OP IX is the power reserve variant of the OP III. It is still based on automatic Valjoux 7750-P1 and features * 13 1/4 lignes size * 21 jewels * Panerai personalisation on the bridges and rotor * Glucydur balance * 28,800 VPH * Incabloc shock protection * 42 hours power reserve It is certified with a C.O.S.C. chronometer certificate. Its characteristic signature marks are small seconds at 9 and a date at 3, and a power reserve indicator at 4. |

Hi Guys,
Sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get back to you. Zed, thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive response. I measured the watch and it is 44mm so I am assuming it is a PAM124. I will post a picture this weekend. My watch has been worn and I love it. Given that the stainless steel bezel and crown protector have small marks on them (the marks are not really noticeable) do you think I should take it back to Panerai and ask them to replace them? Case back also has a few small scratches? Regarding the 275 thanks for the advice I told the AD that I did not want to purchase one. What models do you think I should look at if I want to buy one as an investment? Or are they like Rolex and you just buy what you like as the number produced limits any upside in appreciation. Thanks |

with regards to an investment. i would go for the limited editions.. there are a lot of these some tend to go up in price others seem to hold and not appreciate.. one thing for sure (i think).. they do not lose especially if you get the older models whereby a base for intrest has been established.. I have 1 PAM92 Arktos which is limited edition of 500. rrp was 5000usd.. now it is in the region of 9000usd.. i am not a collector so i cannot really advise you well but if i wanted to start a collection i would seek certain unique limited editions such as PAM 127 - 249 - 273 - 200 - 163 |
