Funny AD story
Went to my AD yesterday and picked up a Wimbledon 36 for my wife(see my incoming post) but as we were waiting to get in the store, we experienced a funny moment.
The AD just received exhibition models and for the first time in years had watches on display. The buzz by the window displays was something I haven’t seen. Probably about a dozen people looking at the ‘display model only, not for resale’ watches in the windows as if they have never seen a watch in their life. Anyways, there was a guy on the phone in front of us pacing back and forth from the window with red OP to the security guard by the front door. I could barely hear his conversation but I had a feeling he was calling a friend saying they had watches to buy. I told my wife that he’s in for a sad sad reality check and as the hostess came out to ask how she can help him he said he wanted to buy the watch in the display. She proceed to tell him that it’s a display model only and if he wanted to come in and ‘handle it’ and speak with an SA he needed to make an appointment. Unfortunately they were fully booked and he would have to come back another day. He asked if he makes an appointment if he can then buy the watch and she once again explained they have no watches available but an SA would gladly take down a wish list during his appointment. He wasn’t a big fan of what transpired and stormed off. I guess it’s the sad reality of display models making people go nuts at the store. On a side note when chatting with our SA I asked if she was happy they have exhibition models for people to try on she said yes but it’s a double edged sword. It helps those people that understand how the Rolex market works get a feel for which model they prefer however it’s a pain having to constantly explain to others that they can buy the exhibition pieces. Congrats on your wife's new watch!
The other guy is obviously new to the game. |

Not everyone is a flipper...many people have a lot of disposable income after covid years. But it happens everyday anyway. Nothing new. Best of luck with the watch.

I can appreciate the frustration this fellow experienced if he’s new to the brand. I’d be pretty disappointed too but I don’t think I would see myself “storming off” though … it’s just a watch

Personally, I’d be more perturbed by the “you need an appointment” bit. It’s like, “I get you can’t sell me what’s in the case but why can’t someone just chat with me about it for five minutes now?”

I experienced a similar situation at an AD when I was picking up my watch that I had been patiently waiting 2 years for. People calling and walking in expecting to buy a high demand Rolex. It must get old quick working at an AD and they probably spend an inordinate amount of time explaining to people that they have no watches to sell people off the street.
So I am sure it is frustrating for both sides. And AD’s are trying to implement measures to try and deter this and not waste time. |

Good to see exhibitions models finally coming to Canada. My local AD is expecting them in this week as well. I guess it will be nice to try on some of them. Thankfully I should have some chance of getting one eventually.. Feel bad for the brand new buyer who probably has no chance at the harder pieces..

That story is not funny. It’s sad. Everything from the appointments, the exhibition model, and a dude wanting to buy stuff he doesn’t even understand or know about and can’t read properly is sad.
