Making the left handed GMT right handed

A lot of people are upset about the new Destro GMT specifically about the date being on the opposite side. However, it seems to me that Rolex's laziness in not keeping the date at three makes it relatively easy to convert to a right handed watch. Couldn't someone grab a black dial and date wheel from a right handed GMT, have them replaced, rotate the bezel 180 degrees and wear the watch upside down?

I attached side by side picks of the watch as is and upside down. My guess is that this would be a fairly easy change.

P.S. - excuse the average photoshop - not really my strong suit.

Why not just get a green and black bezel for a right handed gmt?

Could also go that way although I have no idea how hard it is to get additional bezels. Otherwise, why would people shell out additional 10K to have a Pepsi and Batman?....why not just buy all the different color bezels?

Making the left handed GMT right handed

Assuming everything is just rotated 180° you’d need a date wheel and dial from a righty for sure. What is not known is the position of the feet on the dial that keeps it in position on the movement. Chances are it won’t line up and you’d have to cut them off and glue the dial to the movement or something like that.

The reason the date is at 9 is because the date wheel is not centered on the movement; it’s off to the side. So unless they were willing to make a whole new movement it had to be at 9.

I think the feet are centered and symmetrical on all GMTs

VTNR may be different. No one knows about this one yet.

Yeah this seems like a heck of a lot simpler approach. Source a gree/black bezel and green 24 hr hand and swap it out on a BLNR or BLNO.

The reason I know a bit about all this is because I wanted to get a ND Sub and change it to Destro.

Yes. Good thing about the new gmts is the text is all white unlike LN that had green text.

Give it to the JOOL TOOL person, I'm sure they can knock the crown and guards off with a standard polish job.

I have read this comment about the date at 9 a couple times...claiming it was just laziness by Rolex.

It is so you can see the date without having to pull your shirt cuff all the way back. Do people think the 3 o'clock position for a watch worn on the left was purely random? Tudor Pelagos destro date is at 3 still. If you are claiming it was to save money...why would Tudor of done it?

Just cut the date in a different spot and make an upside down date wheel.

Also...is "upset" really the correct word to us here?

It’s an easy conversion. The only thing unique about the destro is the date wheel which has the numbers inverted compared to the standard. To convert, you’d remove hands and dial, swap date wheel, and reassemble after rotating the dial 180 degrees before reattaching to movement. The watch hobby is littered with DIY destro conversions.

Didn't I reply to this?? It's not an easy conversion because the dial will be upside down.
