Rolex Milgauss Problem

Hi there,

I’m new to this forum.

My Milgauss is about ten years old now and I hadn’t worn it for a few months.

Few days ago I wound the watch and it worked normal, then during the day it suddenly stopped. No shaking or winding would get it working again.

I left it aside and today I shook the watch and the second hand started a little, then suddenly started going backwards.

Any idea what’s up …… how much do you think estimated cost of repair at Rolex.

Thanks

P

Take it to the Rolex Service Centre in Jardine House. I forget how much they charge, as I haven't been there for some years. Try calling.

Agree with the Old Expat Beast.

If you're from Hong Kong, take the watch to the RSC at Jardine House. I had a similar problem with my watch after not having worn it for months. It'd run then stop and then one time it stopped completely and wounding it only runs it for a few seconds.

Oddly enough when I took it to the RSC and then I tried to replicate the problem the watch started working properly again. Nevertheless, the person that was helping me was happy to ask the watchmakers have a look at it.

Pretty standard, they will take your watch and diagnose it. They will give you a call to let you know what problems they found and the quotation for the amount of repair/maintenance needed. You don't have to fix it if you don't want to. It's pretty quick the whole process. Pretty easy.

The only thing I would like to give you a heads up is that before during COVID in March and April, I heard they were by appointments only so best to call to find out what kind of operation they are on now. Normally, it's just walk-in but you never know these days.

By the way you'll get a nice leather watch case as well after the repair

Possible mainspring is broken quite a cheap part to replace, and seeing watch is ten years old then a full RSC service is needed as for cost full service around $750.

As stated, probably a mainspring failure. My Milgauss did this. Regardless, your next move should be to contact the RSC.

Paid $750 to service mine late last year by RSC, good thing is you get a 2 year warranty. At least in the USA turnaround is about 2 months.

Hong Kong should still be a good bit cheaper than the USA, UK, Europe, etc. I haven't been in for a few years and things may have changed but the HK RSC was always about half the price of the rest of the world. Turnaround time was fast, too. I had an Air King serviced in 11 days, but usual was two to three weeks. It's a big centre as there are (or were when I last checked) over 60 ADs in HK.

Thanks guys for all the feedback. I’ve arranged to take the watch in for a service- about time since it’s been ten years.

sounds like you need a new mainspring. Simple service should fix that.

Hey guys,

Got my watch back- luckily just a full service fixed the problem.

Full service and polish in Hong Kong will set you back $5,350HKD, Which is approx. USD$680.

First class service from Rolex as expected- I was in and out of the service Center within 15 mins.

Thanks guys for all your previous advice.

Thanks for the heads up, Paper8. I haven't tried HK RSC yet, but I used to have my watches serviced by Michael Young of Classic Watch Repair at TST. Turn around time is way faster (since I usually spend less than a week there) and cost of an overhaul is slightly cheaper. Can't wait to go visit once the restrictions are lifted.

Sounds like they've brought their prices more in line with the rest of the world in recent years. Anyway, glad you got it fixed and all good.

Glad to hear it went so well. Post some pics before and after service if you can. Always like to see how nicely they typically come out.
