A bit conflicted
I’ve been on this debate with myself for a few weeks now if not a month at this point and can’t seem to come to a decision. Just putting out there for some discussion to see if you all may have any insight that can steer me a bit more on track.
I use to have a 16600 which I loved, but ultimately ended up selling it because I was on the list for a 126610lv as it’s the green variant I tend to like the most, and I do quite like green. I had used the profit from the sale of the 16600 to buy a Milgauss. I absolutely love the styling of the Milgauss, I love the colors and depth, and think it’s a great looking watch if not one of the best modern ones in the catalog. However I’m more of a 5 digit guy honestly. I keep thinking at this point maybe I should just part with it and use those funds to get back into a 5 digit Sub series watch (16600,16610,14060). I feel like with my tastes in it all this is really a collection staple, where as as much as I like Milgauss it’s more of a really nice novelty item than a watch I consider a staple like the 5 digit sub series. It’s hard for me to pull the trigger because like I say I love the Milgauss, but I’m always longing for the 5 digit Sub/SD back. Just some additional insight with me being married it’s an either or sort of thing between the Sub and Milgauss, and am pretty capped on my collection to that end as I would like to survive to see next year and my kids grow up and all. Thanks for any opinions you all have.

In your situation, I would sell the Milgauss and get yourself another 5 Digit sub.
You said it yourself that you like the sub better, Stick with it as I share the same opinion. Best looking Submariner every made was the 5 digit. Everything is proportioned correctly and more aesthetically pleasing to the eye as well as being equipped with the 3130/3135 movement. I would trade in a heart beat and never look back my friend. You will be happier in the long run. The heart wants what the heart wants. You can't change that or substitute anything to fill the void. Especially when that item is still available. Buy it, service it and wear it in good health!

Follow your heart - get that sub and move on the Milgauss. Nice thing is it should be easy... could have it done by the weekend!

So the Milgauss is not a sub, the latter an icon and I don’t use that lightly. The Milgauss not a particularly versatile watch, quirky design for no good reason, no date and no rotating bezel. It’s an interesting piece if I was curating a collection. However it’s no where near as versatile as a 5 digit sub with time, date, elapsed time, and style.
Nothing wrong with the Milgauss however. I think some are attracted to that watch because it’s quirky and does not scream Rolex and so get to heel they are going against the grain. I get it, I have a sub, and it’s not the most inspired choice. That said, it’s an icon for sure. I have made my peace with it and there are other subs, but this one is mine and has been with me for almost a quarter century. That’s enough for me. We don’t say well I’m not going to wear blue jeans because they are common. Yea, perhaps but look familiar good and function even better. |

Guarantee that, as soon as you sell the Milgauss you will miss it and immediately want to acquire another...

Have you tried on a display 126610LV (with no movement) at an AD? The 5 digits are great but the newer modern 12 series is a league of its own. I say sell the Milly and get the newer version. You won't be disappointed. Just my 2c.

I appreciate all the responses. Some really great points in here as well. As you all mentioned sort of echoing my thoughts the Milgauss although I love it and it’s a really cool watch it’s really not as versatile as say fairly standard Sub. I loose the cool uniqueness of the Milgauss, but the classic Sub is classic for a reason.
To those referencing the 126610 I have tried them on, and they are indeed nice, I’m just really a 5 digit guy. I like the smaller indices and hands over all and aluminum inserts, it’s just understated a bit I think in a great way. They’ve done a great job with the new reference don’t get me wrong, I just prefer 5 digits. As to a 16610lv I never got into it too much because in my opinion the Maxi dial with the 5 digit case just doesn’t sit to well with me.

Agree, the Milgauss is a bit of a niche piece. I went for a white dial- which is even more "nichey"- & throw an orange RubberB on it in the summertime. That said, my Sub bases are covered & if I had to go either/or with the Milgauss vs. a 5 digit Sub, I think there's no Sub-stitute for a classic Sub.

Get a 5 digit Sub. Milgauss looks great for the first few hours. However, it does wear top heavy and not for everyone. Had 2, sold 2. No regrets.

Milgauss is great but get the 16600. One of the best they’ve ever made.

Go with the 5 digit sub/SD. Then sell the Milgauss to me cheap. Provided it's blue.

Thanks again everyone! I appreciate the insight. Lovely picture Gerry. I really miss the 16600. Hoping I can find a good one at a fair price, they seem to be rarer and rarer.
I will undoubtedly miss the Milgauss, but as many said if it’s just where my heart lies in it all it’s probably the right choice. It’s a beautiful watch that I really enjoy, but I think I’ll always feel I’m missing something in the collection if I don’t do it.

Thanks again everyone. Really grateful for everyone’s input. Some really well thought out posts within that really help give me some further thoughts on it all. I really appreciate everyone that took the time to put in such thoughtful responses.
I considered the BB58 as well especially at that price point. I hadn’t thought too highly of them due to the snowflake hand before, but tried one on a couple months back and did a 180. It’s a really great watch. I love the blue with a soft touch strap specifically. However one of the things that bugs me a bit (nothing huge), about the Milgauss is lack of date. My choices a few post before were essentially just in order of preference 16600, 16610, 14060. On top of that with as much as I like the 16600 I had I think settling on something else will always leave me lacking as it’s just not a 16600.

Get a 16610 Sub, in addition to the Milgauss. Wear them for a month, making certain to alternate them daily, every 2 days, whatever.
Then make a decision. Don’t put yourself in a potential cycle of regret. |
