Icon11 N00bie question

If you get offered a piece and you turn it down, does that put you in the dog house? Asking for a friend

For established customers, it's more likely seen as a plus rather than a negative. i.e. AP appreciates it when a customer is honest enough to say thanks but no thanks.

However, as an AP unknown the impression may be different.

Was it a Code 11.59?

Nah I’ve turned down pieces I wasn’t interested in a few times, but did check one out in person and loved it, just wanted a different color (which I’ve bought since).

That said - it may also depend on what you’re asking for. If you want a blue jumbo RO I doubt you’ll get the call without a long wait or prior purchases. Just be honest with your advisor on what you’re looking for and what you’d consider, and keep an open mind. Seeing the code in person for us definitely changed our opinion, so I’m glad we went in open minded when offered

If you turn down something on your wish list and your not an established customer, they may think your not genuine.

But if it's something you never asked for then I think it's fine to politely decline.

I wouldn't buy anything that I don't want. Make sure the boutique has a wish list of pieces you want. If they offer something on the list and you don't buy, that might reflect negatively on you. Declining something that you had no interest in shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for your comments

I was offered the grey dial RO Diver but I prefer the green dial version which is what I have on my wish list. The grey looks really nice too but my heart is set on the green so I had to turn it down. I guess I could have just purchased it and flipped it but I don't play that game so just passed. I'd rather it goes to someone else who loves it. SA was honest and said he couldn't guarantee me anything else but that he would keep me posted.

We'll see...

You handled this with integrity, and regardless of what happens, this matters. Nicely done.

You made the right move.

Did you go see the grey in person? It’s pretty fantastic.

Thanks guys

Wasn't able to see it in person. My SA texted me Sunday(!) to let me know I got dibs on it if I wanted it. Told him I'd think about it if he can give me an hour. I looked at the pics online, it's very nice but doesn't sing to me as much as the green. I told him if I were to spend that kind of money, might as well be on something I really want.

Here's the funny thing though, I used to deal with the boutique and started going there since 2016 I believe and I'm pretty sure I was in line for a 15202 or 15400 at least but my original SA there left and I got passed to another SA who I never felt any connection with. I would text or email a few times before he would respond. So a few weeks ago I visited the AP House and met my new SA. Had a nice meeting with him and had a good time chatting but from my previous experience I thought this will be another dog and pony show for who knows how long before I get the call. So I was surprised (to put it mildly) that I got the call for an AP Diver less than 3 weeks after my first visit. And he remembered my birthday in August! I'm hopeful I get the call for something in my wish list by Christmas

Cheers and Happy Fourth!

If you have never bought from the boutique before and you get offered a piece but decline, they will never waste time by calling you again.

Clients can turn down a watch but someone with no history, that they were nice enough to call, turns them down? They're deleted.

Plenty of people who want the watch, and you just wasted their time. Sorry

I'll take a different angle here. Obviously they liked the OP to call and offer a piece in a short period of time. By him declining a piece he does not want also demonstrates that he is not a flipper and truly in it for what he wants and likes. That's how my relationship started with my boutique. I was offered 2 pieces before I accepted the 3rd and now I am on #4 with a 5th coming at end of year.
