9 months owning a Newman OF Daytona - & potential trade

I have really enjoyed wearing this watch over the past 9 months or so of owning, especially working from home I have worn this watch 3-4 times a week (I don't prefer to wear this to the office, I think you guys can understand). I take it with me to dinners out, even to the gym, calisthenics and everything from shirt/chinos combo to tank tops and joggers. It's a v versatile piece

But recently I've been thinking perhaps to change it up, and in actual it does bother me that sometimes you have 1-2 watches in your collection that are flashier than others, then the rest of the watches can be more your everyday pieces.

It has occured to me that the OF Daytonas, especially Newman and the black dial, there is a lot of black & somehow after a while it may seem quite imbalanced and quite lowkey as a wearer of the watch.

I've always liked the GMT Pepsi and recently been watching/gravitating towards the Blue Skydweller especially now the prices have dropped.

So in short, as follows:

1. For the OF Daytona owners, are you finding the same after wearing the watch for while? That it feels like the colours are a bit imbalanced towards black esp with the OF rubber bracelet?

2. Would you do the trade? On current value and perhaps some haggling I could probably trade my Daytona straight for those two.

As an aside, the PM is my 1st PM piece. I've got other watches which are mainly black, then AP RO Chrono, then 2 other steel sports watches (non Rolex)

I love Daytonas but this is not my favorite. I’d part with it. And not refer to it as a Newman again, close the book on ownership and the pseudo pseudonym.

This is akin to having your favorite dessert every day of the week. Anything else will feel better.

Put it in the safe for 6 months before parting with it. It’s a bad time to sell anyway.

Personally I prefer the white gold panda or the yellow gold yellow dial panda on OF before that one.
It is still a very very nice watch all the same.
But if you can do a 2 for 1 the Pepsi GMT & Blue Sky Dwellers are excellent choices.

I would not do that trade. Your OF Daytona is a great looking watch. I did not follow your comment about the watch. Do you think it is dull looking? Given the opportunity I would consider trading the other two for your watch!

My sense is that is that the Watch community generally finds this specific configuration PURE FIRE: as in hard to get and drop dead gorgeous. Between the shiny ceramic bezel and yellow gold case and clasp, you have plenty of contrasting pop and flash against the black strap. As suggested earlier, stick it in a safe now for 6 months. You’ll be glad you did.

I’m thinking that having 2 steel pieces would be much more versatile than having 1 OF PM piece. In the context of living in Hong Kong, Daytona’s are very common although the 2-tone surprising is the most common, followed by steel then OF.

Occasionally would see the Pepsi but have never seen the Blue sky dweller on anyone’s wrist here

I would lean towards making the trade and ditching the tank tops.

Sounds like SS/WG fits your taste/style better than YG. I am the same way, except I own a Bluesy and love the occasional flash and pop of color on the wrist. Your YG OF is a beautiful but very sporty model and isn’t for everyone.

Bottom line: if you think you would enjoy a GMT/SkyD combo better than your Daytona, do the trade. You may have to add some cash to the transaction though, as the PM Daytonas have taken a bigger % hit than popular SS sports models. Good luck on your decision though.

I have this watch. I have had the skydweller but not in blue. I have had the ceramic GMT pepsi in jubilee. I would not do this trade.

IMHO, this watch is not as great looking in pictures. But it shines IRL. The black makes it look very sporty and the gold is not too much. The details on the red chrono hand and the red surrounds actually work extremely well. If I could have this watch in all gold with ceramic, i’d probably grab that but i think i’d end up wearing it just like this almost all the time.

The skydweller is really cool. I recommend you getting in Jubilee. The fluted bezel with jubilee just has an amazing shine to it. I got one and i found the 41mm datejusts to be absolutely pointless. It’s beautiful. Has that extra thickness to it if you like that.

The GMT. I found that the watch looks great but most people who wear it look like they’re being worn, including myself. Looks best in the case or on a Rolex dealer’s wrist with his suit. They’re also very common as compared to the daytona or even skydwellers. But I already had the blue on oyster. So i did not need this one.

Both those are great selections. You gotta do what you feel true to. But nope I would not trade. I would just buy the others. I’ll probably pick up a blue jubilee skyD after the storm.

what you said is what i always found to be the problem with that specific OF daytona

that dial is great on the full gold model but when you have it on rubber the black is overwhelming and it doesn't feel like much of a gold watch. i think for OF you need to go with one of the champagne dials so that the balance is there and it actually wears more like a gold watch. not sure if i would trade for a pepsi but if you like the OF maybe try a dial swap?

Thanks, I agree with that pretty much wholeheartedly. Somehow, for those thinking about getting the PM OF Daytona, if it’s your 1st PM piece, for me it’s almost like it scratches that itch but not 100% and it still is something you may wanna aspire/purchase another piece in the future.

I really do like the ceramic bezel, you really feel like the watch is almost bombproof and I’ve worn it during workouts on money bars doing all kinds of pull-ups, dips, front lever as well as lifting weights with barbells. As I mentioned before, I just put a sweatband and it never dings or scratches with that way of wearing it.

And I’m also leaning to what you said about not doing the trade and just adding the skydweller. Heck, I was one of those who were seriously thinking of getting it even before any speculation it was going to be available in SS and purely a PM piece. And the blue SD would really top it off

Yep v true. I’ve got other watches which have black dial/black rubber strap for that kind of look. And I’m not keen on the full gold Daytona as I’d be wary of scratching the bezel too much so that’s why I’ve also been looking at some daydates

I love my OF Daytona but I have the WG version with steel dial. I think the contrast between the WG, black subdials and steel dial match perfectly with the OF.
If you don’t love urs, you should trade it for something you’ll enjoy

Can someone please tell me why this watch is referred to as a “Newman”?

Paul Newman had died long before this watch came out!

Thanks.

As you probably already know, "Paul Newman" daytona is now used pretty generously. It can apply to reverse panda, gold watches, non-art deco fonts, etc... The modern ceramic 116518LN with "Paul Newman dial" is nicknamed this due to the red minute track ring around the dial.

You have to remember though, that it was the dealers who created and popularized this idea and they really only meant 1 dial at the time. The idea continued to expand beyond to reverse panda, to different bezel combos different reference numbers, different fonts. To the point now, where dealers use it however the hell they like.

It's been well documented that Paul Newman himself has at least 5 daytonas he has worn. Most of them would not be considered "Paul Newman daytonas"

1. The original 6239 steel bezel with Paul Newman dial that sold for $17.7m.

2. The 6263 acrylic bezel with reverse panda, non exotic dial. Also given to him by his wife and engraved. He left this to one of his daughters. But this is not considered a "paul newman dial".

3. The 16520 white dial daytona. Given to Paul Newman by Rolex and worn by Paul Newman. However, this is not considered a "Paul Newman dial"

4. The 16520 black dial daytona reverse panda. There are photos of him wearing this, but not considered a "Paul Newman dial".

5. The 116519 White gold daytona reverse panda. There are photos of him wearing this, but not considered a "Paul Newman dial".

Yes, this is undoubtedly the OF PM Daytona I’d get.

Because secondary dealers wanted to hype up this watch and decided to stick the name “Paul Newman” on it. It has no connection to Paul Newman the person, and neither does it have the features of a Paul Newman Daytona. It’s just a pathetic cash grab by despicable secondary dealers to hype up everything even when they know that they are lying through their teeth!

The Red minute track on the periphery is not even stepped down. The sub dial does not have the lollipop style markers. There is no contrast between the minute track and the main dial. Yet here we are having to entertain the idea of this being a Paul Newman Daytona….

This is what I've always thought.

As far as I'm concerned, number 1 above is the "Paul Newman" Daytona, nothing else.

Thinking of also letting mine go after nine months. I think I would prefer the watch on a full gold bracelet with the gold bezel.
