Getting an engagement gift

So I'm getting engaged and my GF is offering to get me a watch as an engagement gift. Since the economy isn't doing that well I've decided to forgo the ROLEX and go for something less expensive. I've narrowed my choices down to the new TAG Heuer Calibre 5 aqua racer (link below)

or an Omega planet ocean.

I'm not sure which one I should go for, I'm looking for some opinions

pre owned ladies rolex normally do not hold their value very well.

if you don't mind going down that route..why don't consider one.

Terrence, the watch is for HIM.

I say go for the Rolex anyway - here's why:
If you get a TAG Heuer or Omega, but really want a Rolex, then you'll continue to lust after one, and may eventually get one. If that happens, the watch you got as an engagement gift will be relegated to second standing.

If you get the Rolex now, you may never want another watch ever again, meaning you will wear the watch your GF/fiance/wife gave you for life!

In fact, because of the economy, now is the best time to get a Rolex. Consider pre-owned to save a couple grand, then you'll be closer to the cost of the Omega anyway!

For the cost of a new PO, you should be able to get a pre-loved exp 2 or Sub no-date. Personally, I'd go that route.

Buy the Rolex. I bought myself a TT Blue Sub as my "gift" after months of window shopping and lurking. It came down to the fiance finally asking me if the Rolex was less than her ring, so I could now justify the purchase, as the answer was yes!!

Get the Rolex!

I tend to agree with David, ask if she'll let you chip in so you can get the Rolex? Tag's are fine, Omega's are fine, I've owned both, but they are not cheap and while their movements are top notch swiss made, they aren't in house movements. Rolex makes the best looking and the best working watches for the money IMHO. Spending 2.5-3K on an Omega with a modified ETA movement makes no sense to me, spending 4K on a used Rolex with their in-house movement does make sense to me

the reason why I opt to not get the Rolex is cause I already have a EXP II white dial. The Rolex watches that interest me are the TT Sub or the GMT IIc both which are going for double the Omega + Tag :(

If it is between Omega or Tag, NO DOUBT . . . go with an Omega. They are extremely fine watches that still--to my surprise--are underestimated by too many.

Take away a lot of brilliant marketing by Rolex, and Omega and Rolex are comparable in many ways--except price.

And this is from a total Rolex guy who does not currently own a single Omega (but will again one day!)
