Rolex versus my wife’s jewelry
My wife asked me to sell a bunch of her jewelry that was quality stuff. She purchased her new best rings and pendant with the proceeds of my sales. Actually my wife has good taste.
IMHO a Rolex is much easier to own than a bunch of 14K and 18K rings, bracelets, necklaces and pendants. Not complaining about jewelry but Rolex is compact and holds value |

Jewelry does not sell well at all compared to what you paid retail.
If it's not signed by a big name you'll get little more than scrap value. Even if it's a big name, you'll sell it for pennies on the dollar compared to what you originally paid. |

With as much as a 500% markup on some jewelry it makes the margins difficult in a sell/trade back to retailers. Also, jewelry can be difficult as tastes and styles vary. My wife has some very nice pieces but when we purchased them we knew that even when you get a good price you will get crushed on a sale or a trade.

Jewelry is a tough resale. Becomes “estate” pieces at the jewelry store of a friend of ours and sits for very long periods of time…

My wife sold most of her mom's jewelry at a consignment store and I presume did better than scrap value for most of it.
But yes, generally I agree - most jewelry has stupendous retail markups and is nearly worthless on the secondary market.

The exceptions to the rule are vintage/antique pieces signed by big names or things with top quality stones.
In my experience you can often negotiate more than 40% off an estate jeweler's asking price which shows you how much margin they make. |
