I have not owned a current Breitling, but did have three going back to the late 60's, all three spent more time on the work bench than on my arm. I like the looks of the new Breitlings but I don't think I would buy one over a Rolex of any kind.

The Explorer is boring and the Breitling MB is a thing of beauty

Tough call, both are very different watches.

Don't let the crystal on the Breitling worry you, they are superb, its sometimes impossible to see that there is actually a crystal fitted, in house or ETA movements don't really bother me, most of the time one is looking at the face not the back, Breitling use tried and tested ETA movements that are heavily modified and keep excellent time.

Which do I prefer? the Rolex, simply because between the two models compared I like the face of the Explorer better, if the choice was between the Explorer and the Avenger Sea Wolf I would, and have, picked the latter.

What I will add is that IMHO whichever of the two that you choose, you will not be disappointed, great problem to have, neither solution will be wrong.

I was confronted with the same sort of situation earlier this year. It was between a Breitling SuperOcean Steelfish (new for $2800) or an ExpII (used for $3600) from the same AD. After days of deliberation I went with the ExpII. Here's the moral to the story. Today I returned the ExpII to the same AD and traded it in for the new GMTIIc. The AD gave me my full purchase price back for the ExpII AND took off $500 from the GMTIIc. Had I purchased the Breitling, I would still have the Breitling. It is a fantastic watch but will never be worth even close to what I paid for it. I'll be posting my review of the new GMTIIc along with photos in a separate thread.

You left $900 on the table when you purchased the GMT.
