I'm looking at a new Rolex DJ, however the Serial is not inside the face. the guy tells me its a 2008 ...

I think started "M" or even "Z" series.

Also depends on the model.

May have been purchased in 2008 and its an earlier serial.

They began in ~'05 with the gold models and have been phasing in other models gradually...

The guy can't really tell you that it is an '08 model. Rolex doesn't manufacture by "model year". You need to know the serial number to be able to "guesstimate" the year of manufacture (they also do not release when a particular serial is released... it's all done by guessing)
