Amount of gold in a Daytona Oysterflex?
Does anyone know how much gold is used to make a Daytona Oysterflex?
I’d did a Google search but it only came up with a few figures for solid gold Daytona’s. Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If you’re talking about the strap I hope none lol. The case and clasp have a lot, but I have no idea of the actual amount. It’s certainly a lot less than the 20 grand delta over steel though, if you’re doing a value calculation.

The OF Daytona (MSRP $29,500 - $30,500 depending on type of gold) is only $14.95k to $15.95k over SS Daytona (MSRP $14,550), and the spread is getting even less at current market prices.

PM Rolexes have between 7-9K worth of PM, and that's with the bracelet. The bracelets, being solid, are pretty heavy. So the watch head and clasp is probably around 50% of a complete watch. and that could be off by some.

An even bigger head scratcher … why is the platinum Daytona or DD vastly more when Platinum is cheaper per ounce than gold. I know Platinum is .950 so he’s lied than gold at .750, but even so, it’s a LOT MORE expensive.

Platinum is denser and used in a nearly pure state. But around half the price of pure gold. So it works out to about the same amount of $$ worth. Pt is considered more exclusive and prestigious though and that is what you are really paying for. It's a fairly breathtaking markup.

I think I read online that since it's harder, it's more difficult to work with. Yet still--stainless steel is harder than platinum, so I don't fully get that.

Kind of an internet myth. Yeah, Pt has certain properties like "gluiness" that makes it more difficult to work with than gold alloys. But all kinds of super steel alloys and titanium alloys are worked in industrial processes all day and every day. Titanium is very hard to work with between low thermal conductivity and work hardening. I mean heck, they machine rubies all day long to very precise tolerances to make those teeny weeny jewels in the movement. |

When you work on other metals for example, they shave and chip off. Platinum just “moves”. |

The amount of gold in most high end brands and price charged relate mainly to the name on the dial and not the amount of precious metal, most precious metal weight will be in bracelet. Today even the watch cases are not solid in the sense of the word.
