Things haven’t changed much short of availability. Most people here wear and respect watches just as you have for the past 10 years.

Thoughts From a New Member

Nothing about this seems like someone that is new to the forum or has not been in touch with the brand in recent times.

I’m calling BS.

The gentleman who sold me my watch ten years ago doesn't work there anymore. In fact, the store changed names, and then relocated under different ownership yet again.

I walked into the new boutique without an appointment and was greeted warmly. I explained that ideas of a dressier watch got me back in the market but that I was more or less open to anything. (Ultimately I just want a second piece that looks different from my Sub. So a white or blue dial should do that.)

He then gave me a very professional tour of the boutique and the line. We used the website for models that weren't on display.

I tried on a number of DJs first. I'm a muscular but slender guy with small wrists. At first the SA thought I could get away with a 36 but then showed me why he preferred the 41 on me. He even showed me how the Sky Dweller at 42mm doesn't look big because it also has more height and is therefore evenly proportioned.

We moved on to the GMTs which I didn't try on because of how similar they are to my Sub. I've also tried on a friend's Milgauss so I didn't bother with that either.

He took me to the Sea Dweller case and told me the story of James Cameron's dive. The D-Blue Deep Sea looked really with the gradient dial, and the new 50mm version is huge in person. The SA admitted that it will probably end up in someone's safe. But he's also heard from big guys who want it as their daily wear.

There were too many beautiful options for me to even think of placing an order! He totally understood and commiserated. He correctly had me pegged for a Virgo in that I analyze and overthink these decisions, but once I've decided I act with reckless abandon.

He admitted that the inventory situation is challenging but explained that he's there to be my advocate. He said I should come in whenever I had a few free minutes for a cleaning and a coffee. He said plenty of people put their names down, disappear, and then call months later asking why they haven't heard anything.

I picked up a new product catalogue on the way out. They're like little coffee table books to me and it's fun to compare them to the older ones.

I was in the area a week later and dropped off a card I wrote thanking him for his time and attention. I got a phone call from him the next day. I don't recall what he said verbatim, but it was along the lines of, "I read your note. Thank you. You're exactly the kind of person Rolex wants to do business with."

Maybe he was gassing me up because I hadn't ordered anything yet. But I wouldn't see the point in that if orders are hard to fulfill quickly, even if he doesn't think I'm going the SS route. He also said something along the lines of me not being a collector. Now, that could have been a euphemism for "flipper." I didn't get that sense though. It could mean they'd prefer watch ownership spread out more evenly. It could mean they resent someone who wants every cool color scheme the GMT comes out in.

(And I get that! The colorful bezels are gorgeous. On my second visit to drop off the card, he raced me to the GMT cabinet to put a new watch on my right wrist for the first time. I'm sure you all know why. It was actually comfortable and didn't feel as out of place as I thought it should.)

I don't know. This was just one remark mentioned off hand by one person. You all have the experience and knowledge that I don't. So your opinions and interpretations are welcome.

Welcome to the board! Seems that you found a good SA to work with, good luck!
