Would you do this?!

Been offered a trade out of the blue of 3 SS Rolex (polar exp 2, Yachtmaster 40 rhodium and Tiffany OP36 for a mint Platinum Lange 1 moonphase. (Like the one pictured).
At first I dismissed it, but after stewing on it and watching some videos about Lange, I’m almost tempted. What are your thoughts?

if it were me, no. But that's only because the ALS doesn't appeal to me. I have no clue about relative value of the trade.

I would. Think it’s fair enough trade. Assuming I had other watches and they weren’t my only three

I wouldn’t trade… Purely on the basis that the variety in your collection appeals to me more than the lust for the Lange.

Would you sell the 3 watches in question, receive $41,000 in your hands and then handover $41,000 for the Lange 1?

Sometimes we forget the actual monetary value of a trade.

I wouldn´t do it, not because I don´t like A. Lange & Söhne watches (I do, and most of them are really beautiful), but because they wouldn´t suit me. I´m a clumsy accident-prone chap, and that´s why I wear a robust Rolex (Submariner). A. Lange watches, although incredibly well made, are, from what I´ve heard, much more delicate...dress watches, with the exception of the stainless steel or titanium Odysseus. And here in Germany I´ve heard that most ADs won´t touch Lange watches when a repair/service is needed...the watches are nearly always sent back to Glashütte. No big deal if you live in Germany, but imagine the hassle of sending one from the UK! Just what I´ve heard, but worth considering!

I personally just don’t like the look of ALS watches, therefore a definite no from me.

In case of a service you bring the watch to the nearest AD and they will take care of shipping it back/forth.

Or you reach out directly to ALS and they will send you a fully insured and secure shipping box including shipping label.

To be fair to ALS, it's really no more hassle than any other watch brand.

Servicing an ALS must be a nightmare.

I'd keep the Rolex.

I like that particular Lange & Sohne a lot and think it is worth that offer’s price point.
IMO 3 SS garden variety Rolexes (including the over popular blue Tiffany OP) being traded for a platinum nice complication Lange A is a win win win…

I would. But that's probably because I personally don't care for any of the Rolex pieces you have in your collection.

It’s tempting like you mentioned, the Lange is a classy piece but I would rather hold on to my Rolex collection.

Well with this new information added in, yes I would do that trade.

Simply because the watches being traded have superior alternatives (to my taste) in the collection already.

In that case…if you’ll love and get more enjoyment from the Lange more than the Rolex…then go for it.

Thanks for all your input. Really enjoying looking at the differences in opinion. I paid retail for all my watches, and the idea of trading up really appealed to me there.

I do love the ALS, really interesting watch. I've never worn precious metal and I've never really worn dress watches.

This comment was the one that probably had most impact- No I probably wouldn't pay £40K for it!

I love Lange. All servicing is now done at the factory and is expensive. No idea of the turnaround time. The bezel is a scratch magnet. It is haute horology. If you love it and won't want to buy back the stuff you traded, go for it.

ALS is head and shoulders above Rolex and ,IMO, should replace AP in the Holy Trinity.

I would do the trade purely because I think you could get the Explorer II and YM back fairly quickly if you wanted to. The tiffany would be hard to find again even at 36.

If you feel you need to take the plunge into high horology, do it. If you love the references you'll need to give up or if you would be left with no daily wearers, then stay put.

Op - four words for you:

Yes. In. A. Heartbeat.

Away from the Rolex fanboyism, ALS make spectacular watches with some of the finest finishing you will ever find on any watch, anywhere. They are top-end, highest tier watchmakers. From a horological perspective there's clear water between them and Rolex. Plus you have another 3 Rolex's to fall back on, so again - Yes. In. A. Heartbeat.
