Question cyclops on Rolex Explorer II

Hi so I bought a Rolex Explorer II from a watch store and when they sent me the watch, the sapphire glass was scratched so I told them I wanted a new one. They replaced the glass with a Generic Sapphire glass. They said it will look exactly like the original and will not affect water proofing or anything like that.

Can you guys tell me if this cyclops look normal or is it off or anything?

No pic, but either way I'd be suspicious of a "generic" crystal unless it was a service crystal from Rolex. Particularly without a price difference.

The cyclops is just stuck on the crystal with glue and a sapphire crystal is just a sapphire crystal.

I would want OEM on my Explorer II. If necessary I would pay.

So if you have a generic glass, when taking to rsc, would they service the watch since it doesn’t have a Rolex part?

Watch Store or a Rolex AD? Not sure I would trust a watch store making this replacement.

Take it to a Rolex authorized dealer for an original part replacement. This sounds sketchy. If they are putting aftermarket crystals in their watches, what other original parts would/could they replace?

Yes in my experience with also an Explorer II. It’s only recently that there is a Rolex representation here, and 10 years ago, I used a local watchmaker to replace the glass on my Explorer II. I had it serviced at Geneva HQ several years later. No problem at all, I might have told them beforehand, not sure.

Story behind this pic, please...... I wear mine in some pretty rough situations and have tried to mentally prepare myself for something like this to happen.

Yeah, I don't think I'd be too happy with a generic replacement crystal. I'd demand an original one. If they won't do it, ask for a refund instead and keep shopping for another.

Sapphire crystals are just that sapphire crystals and the LEC in crystal is the only difference, plus there have been reports even service crystals from Rolex had no LEC in crystal.Plus its doubtful if Rolex themselves make there own movement/bracelet screws, lume paint, plus a few things are still out sourced by Rolex, like mainsprings they are made by Schwab-Feller AG, all movement bearing and cap jewels, watch crystals, spring-bars, and a firm called Aiguilles makes all the watch hands for all models. And some years ago now some movement parts were finished by home workers .Plus dials are made in 3 different factories now all owned by Rolex, so there has always been and always will be tiny variations on dials over any reference production years.

From here that cyclops looks…um…well…invisible…same for the sapphire crystal.

But - regardless of the missing picture, there are factors to consider with aftermarket crystals we haven’t discussed.

First and foremost, was the watch under any remaining factory warranty? Slapping on an aftermarket crystal voids it.

It may not be the same regarding height and quality. Nor the magnification power of the cyclops.

Lastly, and most importantly, you’ll know it isn’t 100% Rolex and it might bother you forever.

Seems mad to me to put an aftermarket crystal on a Rolex but each to their own.

Here's my thought. I've said it many times, but hey, it's Christmas.

If you're going to treat yourself, treat yourself. The process you're describing doesn't sound like a treat, to me.

I'm not timid and afraid of going grey since I stick to what I know, but this is a refund me now situation. A seller who would suggest such a "fix" would not be a seller I would want to deal with.
