A little help with DateJust?

Hi all, I am considering two DateJusts (assuming of course I am fortunate enough to get them!) and I am torn between sizes.

My thinking is to go for a dressier configuration on the first (DJ36, Oystersteel and yellow gold, white dial, Roman numerals, fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet), that much is pretty certain in my mind.

My doubts are with the second, sportier, everyday DJ. I have placed a request for a DJ41, Oystersteel and white gold, bright blue dial, fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet, but I am always going back and forth on the size of the 41, thinking it's a mistake and that I should also pick this in 36 as well.

My wrist is 6.9in (17.5cm). I have tried on both DJ sizes at the AD and I don't think either of them looks bad or weird on my wrist. The truth is that coming from larger size watches such as the Speedmaster and Seamaster, the first few minutes after trying the DJ36 I was in shock thinking this is way too small, but the more I kept it on my wrist, the more it started feeling right, to the point that that I won't even consider the DJ41 for the dress configuration. I just don't know what to do about the blue one.

I know ultimately there are no right or wrong answers here and at the end I should go with my gut feeling, but since I am new to the Rolex world and I'm sure you guys know a lot more about the DJ or you maybe think that the DJ41 is a passing fad (just saying!) and since I'm not a trader, I should play it safe and stick with the classic 36 on both, or maybe you have probably gone through a similar dilemma. If any of the above resonates with you, I would certainly appreciate your thoughts, gentlemen.

Thank you for your time, it's much appreciated!

I have a 6.75 inch wrist and I no longer wear a DJ36. I bought my wife a rose gold and SS DJ36 with fluted bezel on jubilee bracelet and it looks fantastic on her but I find it too small for me. I prefer watches in the 39mm-41mm size range. I would go for the DJ41 which is the new classic men’s size. But that is just me, you mileage may vary....

I had a similar debate before I decided to purchase a 36’’ Explorer I. I watched many videos, reviews and tried it multiple times.

I have a 6.5 wrist and the watch is very, very comfortable. The more I wear i, the more I like it. I have/had bigger and heavier watches nothing ever felt this good. 36’’ was the right choice for me and since I have no plans to sell it I dont care much what the popular size is today or in the future.

Good luck getting the your watch. I am sure you will love regardless of the size you end up getting!

Take care,
MAC

Do you have pictures trying both? Am a fan of the 36 mm size, to me the 41 mm looks out of proportions. Below my 116264 on my 7 inch round wrist:

A little help with DateJust?

I have a 7.25” wrist and have owned a couple dj41s. Sold them and now have a 36mm daydate. Yes, the bigger size is modern vs classic but I didn’t care for all the empty dial space. It makes sense on a sport watch with a big bezel but not on the dj, just my opinion.

No wrong answer but I’d say the smaller watch is more comfortable.

I have a 7.25” wrist and the 36mm and 41mm both look and fit great. For Roman numerals, the DJ41 dial seems a bit less crowded.

Of the two watches you describe, I lean toward the Oystersteel, fluted bezel in either size; white dial for the 36mm; blue dial for the 41mm. Both are fantastic, versatile, great fitting watches.

~7.5 inch wrist and my 36mm DJ (on a jubilee) is a dress watch, is very comfortable and looks fantastic. It's tough to read in certain lights but I think that has more to do with the fluted motif dial than the size. With that said, I would want my everyday watch to be larger, comfortable still but easily legible.

I have a 7 1/2 inch wrist, and my the 36mm DateJust is my favorite watch. It gets more wrist time, than my SS Submariner Date.

I was offered the black OP 41, and turned it down.

I went with the DJ41 on my 7.5" wrist. It's like 39.5mm, which is about perfect for me.

Really depends on the watch.
My wrist is 7" and I wear a 40mm Sub date, but prefer a 36mm Datejust or 36mm DayDate compared to a 40mm Day date or 41mm DJ.

I think there is too much dial space on a 40mm DD or 41mm DJ. My personal opinion is that those classics look best in 36mm.

Good luck w/ your choice

Just remember that the DJ41 is only 39+mm.

What I would say is that if it was me and I wanted a 2nd more 'sporty' DJ, I would go oyster bracelet / smooth bezel / stick markers.
With the fluted bezel / Jubilee / Romans on the other one.

6.5” wrist. Every since I tried the new 36mm explorer I find 39mm+ watches too big.
ps. I no longer have that watch (not because I didn’t like it).

Thank you all for your answers!

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of me trying the watches on with sizes (I was too busy trying to take it all in) so you'll have a clearer picture, but the more I think about it and from the majority of the responses here, I think I will revisit the AD and ask to change my request to a DJ36 for the sportier version as well.

A little help with DateJust?

You mentioned Seamaster and Speedmaster, so using those as a point of reference, the DJ41 is going to wear and feel a lot smaller than those too.

I have a Speedmaster, Seamaster, Submariner and DJ41. The DJ41 is perfect for me. It’s also my lightest, thinnest and smallest wearing watch I have. If I bought a DJ36, I think I would have a serious case of buyers remorse right now.

Just my 2 cents, but if you’re comparing it to your other watches, the DJ41 might be perfect for you.

The DJ41 would probably be a watch you would be happier with both watches have a nice look. The DJ41 would have the edge on wrist presence . Good luck!

I have a 7.25 inch wrist. I would absolutely love a 36mm Datejust with a jubilee, fluted bezel, and palm green dial. I think the 36mm size is absolutely classic and the proportions are off on the 41mm. This is coming from someone who also wears a Speedmaster (42) and Pepsi (40).

Heck, I'm going to get an aneurysm over this!

I think I'm gonna give this a few more days so that my AD doesn't think I'll constantly bug him for the watches (especially since I don't have any kind of buying history with them) and early next month, I'm gonna go down there again and ask to try these sizes on, once more.

Thanks to all that have chimed in, I really appreciate that!

I think you are over thinking it and you were right the 1st time. For a more dressy appearance, go with the 36mm DJ. For a more sporty look, the 41 (by the way, it actually measures 39.5 mm, not 41).

Light color dial tends to visually appear larger, and dark dial looks a little smaller. Therefore if you find the 36 a little small, get a white or silver dial, and conversely if the 41 feels big, get a dark dial (blue, slate, or black)

I also find that the jubilee reduces the size on wrist as the lug-to-lug measures a little smaller on jubilee, bracelet hangs off the lugs with dramatic drop off. The Oyster bracelet adds to the lug-to-lug and confers a slightly larger feel. So: jubilee on the 41, and Oyster on the 36.

Those are just my personal thoughts and opinion. Frankly, just about every configuration on a DJ is great and your wrist is a nice size that can easily accommodate either the 36 or 41 (or both)

My very same DJ 41 BLSJ configuration looks okay if not borderline large on my ~7,25" wrist while the DJ 36 looks a bit small.
I would not consider a DJ 41 with your wrist size as a sportier alternative. I would just choose the equivalent in 36 or went for a professional model.

I like better proportions on DJ 36 , I think if you have wrist < 7,25 definitely 36mm

My 36Dj and I love it.

Went through the exact same process. I have a 6.7” wrist. I bought a DJ41 smooth bezel and jubilee. As much as I wanted to love it I always felt like it was too big. Traded it in for a mint green 36mm oyster/fluted and it is perfect. The oyster bracelet definitely gives it a little bit bigger presence and also makes it a little more sporty.

7.2in/18cm wrist, 60mm span, tried the DJ41, felt much smaller than my Sub41. I even mistook it for a 36mm and asked the SA to confirm the reference as 126334. I understood at that point that 36mm wasn't for me. YMMV.

I had the same experience. When I got my DJ41, it wore much smaller than my Submariner. I thought they made a mistake and gave me a 36 instead.

This is why I know for sure I’d have a serious case of buyers remorse if I got a 36.

For reference, my wrist size is 7.5”.

I wear a 41 with a 6.5in wrist. The 36s never look right in my eye when I've owned them. I've owned two DDs and one DJ in 36 and none stuck. I've also owned a manual 34mm which was pretty sweet and at the price one I could easily have held on to. I like the look of the larger watch as well as believe it is less of a niche item. That makes it more valuable imho.
