Does lume matter when it comes to the day date?

Lume doesn't matter in todays world.

There is almost nowhere that you can't find a light source if you really, really need to look at your watch for telling time.

I have to say I was driving the other evening and I genuinely could not get a glimpse of the time on my black baguette dial lol

I love chronographs but do I need all my watches to be chronos? It is the same with lume. It's fun to mix it up. And I would rather have diamonds on my non-sport PM pieces than lume.

Also, I find that I mostly notice lume when playing the fun game of "which dial shines brightest" with a flashlight or the like. Just not that well used on a day to day basis.

No, not at all. On a DD, the other aesthetics are much more meaningful, IMO.

And...just to be brutally honest, there are watches in the line up whose legibility is not great, even with lume. But that doesn't mean they're not great watches.

I fully agree. The first time I saw a DD with Romans, what really stuck with me was the beauty of each individual numeral.

Man, you're not kidding. And the way the deconstructed Romans interact with the fluted bezel on the DD40 is just magic. IMO.

If I was to get a DD, the lume would be the least of my considerations. I'd pick batons over Romans based on looks only. I'd actually prefer non-lumed faceted sticks if Rolex were to make them, Grand Seiko style.

I think the DD is predominantly a dress piece (as much as Rolex does "dress" outside of the Cellini line), so lume is unimportant. The environments you're expected to be wearing a DD in are never likely to be pitch black.

I chose the black stick dial because I like the looks of it. The lume is just a bonus for me, not the reason for purchasing.

on a day date, no lume in my opinion. the deconstructed roman numerals is fantastic to look at under shining light/bright sun, etc. now a days with everyone having a cell phone, i can figure out the time via phone if needed in dark environments.
