Sub-date delivere not as advertised

Hello everyone.

Question for the hive-mind.
I bought a 40 mil submariner-date, about six years old off a well known sales forum. It was advertised as unpolished, and in very good to excellent condition, described as having been stored away. I will say the seller obtained in a trade and it wasn’t his personal watch.

When I received the watch, I noticed a scratch in the crystal. I brought it to my private dealer, who is a rolex specialist, to ask about replacing crystal and he mentioned that it had been polished. Then he showed me the difference juxtapose a very good condition, exact same model. I could actually see (when placed side-by-side) that the step on the clasp had lost a little detail, as well as the flank on the case where it meets case top, a slight amount of rounding. Additionally, the cyclops window is different, and the bezel has a slightly different action. His opinion is that it was an inexpensive replacement crystal. He also said they can restore the detail, but I’m not sure about the clasp. The time grapher shows it is working well at 28,000. So all this for some extra money, of course.

My question to you all is:

Does anyone have this experience with this and what would you do going forward in this case? This is a new one for me.

Thanks

Return to seller; a cheap replacement crystal goes way beyond false advertising if it was sold as all-original.

Return it.

Cheap replacement crystal may just be the beginning...and a bad one at that.

I would either:

A) Return it for a full refund (if possible)
B) Negotiate with seller to foot the repair bill to get back to close to OEM factory spec with OEM parts. Since the condition was disclosed as VG to EX, some wear I think is reasonable and where the seller made the misstep is to advertised as being unpolished.

The sales description always sounds a bit fishy whenever you hear the caveat of 'got it obtained it in a trade', so 'not their personal watch' yet somehow they'll advertise it as 'unpolished', et.al

A cheap replacement crystal tells you all you need to know about how this watch was treated before you got it. I would return it for a refund immediately.

The seller lied in his ad. Don’t honor that and return the watch

Why did you buy it then? Could you not see it was badly polished?

A "well known sales forum"?

That could be anything from a business on Ebay to a private seller on Chrono24 to some random guy on reddit.

How I would react depends on knowing exactly what kind of seller you are suggesting.

If it was advertised as unpolished and it's not, that may be grounds to return. But good to excellent condition is quite subjective.

If it is polished and he crystal is wrong, what else did they lie about? The replacement crystal is a big deal... shards could have been all inside the watch for all you know? I would return asap.

Wear it, enjoy it, and don't go around comparing your stuff to everything else.

Your friend is no less subjective than the seller about this, and your friend wants to convince you to let him "make it better", all of which will be moot in a few weeks of wearing.
