Datejust Year Model

Hi guys,

I'm doing some research about this Datejust I'm interested in buying. I'm confused about the model number and apparent year. It's a 16220 and the dealer says it's from 2006. They have what it looks like its the original sales receipt which says it was sold in 2006. I've looked up that model number and apparently its supposed to be from the mid 80s to the mid 90s or so.
I wonder if the watch was sold in 2006 as a certified pre-owned since it has a red seal tag. Not sure it that was a thing back then.

Unfortunately I can't seem to upload pictures/links until my 10th post.

I appreciate any thoughts and ideas.

Thanks!

Anybody can post images as long as they meet the attachment requirements for the file type.

Y serial prefix models began in ~2002, but they continued to produce like-letter prefix serials for 2 to 4 years after initial releases. No, it is not a CPO watch.

Red swing take has nothing to do with it. They came with new watches until I believe 2015 when they became green when the watches got a 5 year warranty

Ok perfect! Thank you for clearing things out! I was able to search the serial number first letter on a website and noticed a chart with all serial first letters map to production year. Very nice.

That’s a beautiful time piece. The more I see it the more it’s growing on me.

How much was a datejust in 98?

Possible it could be from 2006 - the newer model to the 16220 is the 116234 and it was introduced Circa ~05' 06'

you should be able to find a newer Datejust 36 116234 probably in the same price bracket as the one you attached above.. and I will highly suggest it since it has solid centerlinks in the bracelet and a hidden clasp.
Which would be a deal breaker for me, idk about you but worth doing your research on it before pulling the trigger.

Best of luck!

The thing is I’m really into this particular design. The fact that the front of the case is brushed and not polished as the newer references. Also the stick w no lume in them makes it very vintage looking but yet not a vintage watch. It’s like the last version of that design and therefore I figure I don’t need to baby it so much. Plus I’ve seen it on brown leather straps and man that got me sold! But yes aim still researching a lot and even looking at different designs to try to avoid buyers remorse 😬.
I currently own the Explorer 36 124270 and think it’ll be a nice addition sort of yin yang but silver.

The watch you’re looking at is a beauty, classic DJ configuration. Mine is a 116234, purchased around 2011.
Hope this works out for you.

I have a 16220 Datejust like one pictured above....

Guilloche/Engine turned bezel white roman dial... The warranty paper is dated 2002 exactly the same as pictured above. The watch shown above may have been made earlier but sold few years later. The best way to determine what year it was made is to google search the case serial number and the bracelet code. Not sure if you live in Kansas City area but the jeweler named on the warranty paper, Meierotto's, is in north Kansas City and maybe you can stop by or call to ask about the watch.
