Depends on how well you know the person. If they are really in to watches and you have the means... a nice GMT or Daytona. If you have a pile of cash and they are "meh" on watches a nice TT DJ or a simple OP they can put on for special occasions.

p.s. DM me I like gifts :)

Traditionally people bought a watch for someone. These days it more accepted to bring the person and let them choose.

I agree that celebrating the birth of a newborn by purchasing a watch for yourself to wear for the next 22 years (before gifting it to that child )seems a disingenuous justification. However buying a brand new watch as a gift for someone to receive today is not at all the "equivalent" of that.
Part of gift giving is the hope that the receiver will enjoy what the giver has selected. Without an element of surprise gift giving would be limited to cash and underneath the Christmas tree would be nothing but envelopes.

I found the question a good, interesting one. For example, receiving a suprise gift gives us that rare opportunity to try something outside of our own narrow minded perspective. If we enjoy the gift we may have learned something new.

Without knowing the age, gender, style preferences, wrist size, relationship to the OP, etc, of the recipient, the "answer" could be literally anything from the entire Rolex catalogue.

I think it'd be a whole lot more interesting a question with a little more info from the OP.

And budget.

It's like asking "what car should I buy?"

I am planning on buying my niece a gold and stainless datejust as a graduation gift. I was thinking it would be neutral and go with other jewelry she may wear. I haven't decided on dial color.

I believe too many traditions have gone out the window for no good sense reason. Newer is not always better.

For many a watch is a personal item. I bought my wife a watch. I was sure she would like it very much, and she disliked it. We sold it. I had to agree not to buy her a watch again without a preview. We bought several watches since, together, and she loved them (and way less expensive than the meteorite ladies watch she did not like).

Be Safe,

Ali

I'll make the assumptions that the gift is for a man and you are looking for the safest models that most people would like. In that case, I would go with something in 36-40mm in SS in a simple color (black, white, champaign, blue). I would think that would make many folks happy.

Maybe ask a few questions to get an idea.

My parents got me a watch for my graduation. I went with them to the AD to pick the watch as I will have it forever. I think it is nice to bring the person along and let them chose. At the end of the day, they will be the one wearing it. The worst feeling from my experience is forcing yourself to wear something which you don't really like.

36 Datejust is probably the most recognized rolex to non watch nerds.

You could gift them a photo of a Rolex (in a box or something) to mark the special event and then you guys can do research together and select the perfect one.

You assume that you can get the Rolex. I would say for a man a Day Date or Daytona.

Now it's always "oh my AD won't play nice w me, what should I do?" Or "my AD sold a watch to someone else and not me, should I be butt hurt?". Or the most stupidest one of all "how should I kiss my AD's @$$ so that he will sell me a watch?" Should shut this forum down, it's boring asf now. Ciao...

Safest answer would be a sub date. If bought at an AD it’s worth at least what you paid for it if they don’t love it they can sell/trade for something else. Or just ask the recipient. If you’re dropping Rolex money on a gift for someone it’s probably someone you know well enough to just ask what they want. Or give them an empty box with a picture of the Rolex crown inside and then tell them they get to pick the piece they want.

Took my nephew and Godson to the AD to choose what he wanted for his 18th coming of age. He selected a Sub date. His younger brother is 18 this year. We have been to the AD and he wanted, and is on the list for, an Explorer 2 black face. that the AD comes up with it.
Both will be gifts that last their lifetime.

I’ve gifted a OP36 black to my father and a SS Daytona to my mentor/business partner. Feel like you can’t go wrong with anything SS Black or White
