I question of blood pressure.

Anyone have high BP? What are if anything are you taking for it. My Dr. is giving me a micro dose of Diovan. It works well but I dont like taking pills/nonrecreational ones excluded. Anyone have any homeopathic suggestions to keep it under control besides cardio 7X a week?

Im no Doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night....

Here's my brief list of things I do on a consistant basis to keep the blood pressure down:
  • Cardio 3 - 5 times per week is good, the more the merrier.
  • Eat oatmeal once per day.
  • No fast foods, high sugars, high fat and high salt foods.
  • Avoid overeating.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Lose weight (healthy eating, working out).
  • Dont sweat the small stuff, ie dont stress out on things.

Mike, I feel your pain!

I HATE taking medicine, but.. thanks to good old Mom and Dad that had five (5!) heart attacks between them... I'm a medium risk for heart disease. Isn't that great! I excercise every day, or very close to it, don't drink, smoke and eat pretty healthy, but my BP and Cholesterol were both boarderline, 200 for the chol and 140/90 for the BP. It didn't help matters that I am SEVERELY Latrophobic, which means I'm scared of doctors which means whenever I went to the Docs office my BP went through the roof!!!! My personal highest was 170/120!!! Pretty good huh? They wanted to take me to the hospital but I kept telling them just let me calm down and it will be normal... which it always comes down to. Anyway, They started me on Lipitor, which had no side effects and got my Cholesterol down to like... 110, ridiculously low. I fought the BP medicne forever! It was never really bad... but always close.. like 130s over the 80s... pushing that 140 and 90 boundry. Well, since I'm in my mid 40s (OK!, closer to 50), I finally gave in and started taking Licinoprell (SP?), the 10MG dose, (second lowest) I've been on it for about a year and next time I go in will ask them to give me the 5MG, lowest possible dose. My BP is doing excellent now, usually in the 110s over 70s, and there really are no side effects from it, (I know what you're concerned about, trust me, it was MY biggest concern as well... no problems there ). And I also know you hate taking medicine... so do I. But, with BP you really don't want to mess around, and, at the stage of life, it's just smarter to take them. Buck up my friend, it's no big deal, and you'll be healthier in the long run

This is bad since it is a silent killer! I was close to having high blood pressure and the best way for me was to learn to relax and not let things in life bother me. Not sure if this helps but I thought I would share.

X 100! Allen is spot on! I used to just blow up at minor-irritating events. I still have a ways to go on that... but am working on it and it really does make a difference!

There is a negative to this too. I learned not to let things bother me because I don't want to get stressed out but at times, this means I procrastinate in having conversations with my wife on important issues. I think this also leads me to joke around too much!

X2

In addition to the above, I've added a brisk walk (mile and a half) daily, increased potassium (bananas) & water (also green tea) to my routine. You will find that your weight comes off, you feel better, and your BP will be better. Sugar is also bad. One down side is that you will need to buy smaller pants.

Thanks very much for all your input. Looks I'm going to have to change some stuff around if I'm ever going to get off this stuff. Of I manage to get off the pills I'll let you know.

As a matter of fact a sense of humour and some good belly laughter are very good for the heart. I myself vent regularly to avoid having things pile up. Keeping fit is also tops in my books for being healthy too. Good luck.

Remember these things can be hereditary as well, high blood pressure may just run in your family. My older brother has the trifecta, high blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. He's been on meds for years with no adverse effects and he feels much better.
Healthy lifestyle changes are good, losing a few pounds and a cardio routine will benefit most people. But remember, all things in moderation, an occasional cheeseburger isn't going to hurt anyone.
You have to live your life.

Good advice! I would add daily meditation maybe linked with a gentle yoga practice. Good luck![low cal' beer]

It's a deal!! Just send me your cell phone and I'll have her call you every time she wants to discuss issues! Sounds like a WIN-WIN situation for everyone!!

Like others have said take a serious look at your diet and exercise routine. Remember that lowering your blood pressure is more of a long-term thing so don't be disappointed if results aren't immediate. I can't remember the exact numbers right now but something like a 10lb loss in body fat corresponds with a 5-7 mm/Hg drop in blood pressure.
