Truth is, though, human nature being what it is, people react to being rewarded. I had an SA tell me during a normal convo that his guilty pleasure was Casio digitals, but that he'd obviously never wear one to work. The AD is nearby a Macy's, where between sales prices and Macy's AMEX incentives, a Casio I knew he'd like was not much more than a couple dozen donuts. No-brainer. He occasionally sends me a beach or golf pic where he's wearing it. Point is, he clearly liked and appreciated it...and he remembers me for it.

I'm in sales. When people give me gifts (rounds of golf or bottles of bourbon, usually), I don't consider it a bribe or cringey (and I don't sell scarcity really). I say thank you and enjoy the gift, and then find a creative way to reciprocate.

I completely agree, and that was a nice gesture with the Casio. A small gesture of great like that is completely acceptable IMHO. For those that don’t feel they want to make a small gift, they is their choice, but for this of us that do, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Plus you never know....maybe next time they're feeling a little peckish they'll be like, " Yo, call that donut guy and offer him that Pepsi in the safe. Make sure he brings them donuts too..."

I typically stop by a week or so later with a bottle of wine and a thank you card. It’s seemed to have worked for me so far. In my first year of collecting they’ve called with “incomings” of a Bluesy, Batman, Explorer 1, and a Panda Daytona. I’m sure every SA/AD is different, but treating them with respect and appreciation has gone a long way. When they called with the Daytona, they specifically noted I’ve been a good customer and am very respectful to the staff.

Thank them with your business and most importantly, kindness. This especially holds true for the ADs that have more to sell than just Rolex

Would you even remotely consider taking the salesperson at a Tag store after they sold you a watch. I suspect the only thing driving this is the scarcity which make it feel like quid pro quo.

There's no harm in doing it but take the hard to get watch out of the equation and the answer is generally clear.

Thank you—this is a great perspective. I totally agree. It should be natural

There is a high end bakery very close to the store. Was thinking of getting an assortment to bring to the store to say thank you when I pick up the watch. Tacky or classy?
Tacky.

When you added in ‘high end’ you were on shaky ground.

I would not do pastries or any sugar items. Nowadays many of us do not eat sugar at all. It kills.
I would go with nice bottle of red wine

Certainly not classy, that’s for sure. However it’s nice to be nice, so why not? It can’t hurt your relationship, that’s for sure.

Yeah avoid sugar and go with alcohol, which causes absolutely no health or social issues, haha.

In seriousness, all things in moderation. Im sure whatever you buy to show your appreciation would be gratefully received

is it really ever a bad idea to be nice to people, I don't think so. You are genuine and want to treat your AD to something nice to thank him so it sounds like a great idea. I purchased a car a few days ago and the dealer went out of his way to arrange everything for me so im definitely going to bring something with me to thank him and his team....Ofcourse a nice note or email can also do the job....

And let's be honest, back in ye olde days when there was no such thing as waiting lists for Rolexes, no-one would've even thought of gifting an AD anything, other than a genuine and heartfelt "thank you very much". Just think of those poor Omega and Breitling AD's who get nothing simply because they have watches available to sell!

Just do whatever feels right to you.
I agree with you on the culture point - seems like this would be a lot more common place and less uncomfortable in the US for example rather than the UK. Again each to their own I have actually seen a box of Kristy kremes on the desk when I picked a watch up once - it was left unopened and untouched lol.

Yes, any sticky snacks at the AD would be weird. It's a rather sterile environment - all the cases spotless, the jewelry and watches without fingerprints or lint.

How are they supposed to eat a pastry?

Bottle of wine a week later OP.

I'm not sure I understand the question.

But if a client went to the donut shop and brought fresh donuts, yes I'm as comfortable if as I was at the donut store.

Now, if they bought a large box in the am and went from customer to customer and let them pick a few - no way.

And I would not hesitate to bring donuts to a customer (and sometimes do).

However, I would never serve homemade cookies or food to a customer, nor reward them to a vendor. If someone were to get sick from some bad tuna they ate elsewhere, they would potentially blame my cookies. I would not want that to cross their mind.

And yes, many many of my customers have rewarded me with very nice gifts for simply serving their needs and beyond,

Same way they eat their sandwich during lunch? I try not to touch anything after eating until I've cleaned my hands. Isn't that how most of us do it since we were old enough to not get jelly residue on the video game controller?

"pics or it didn't happen" is such a worn-out, trite saying... At one time if was cute and clever, but it was overused. esp here.

------

Pics from the ones receiving the gift are ok. That's simple graciousness.

Pics from the one giving the gift are cringe - cause it becomes more about "look at me, I need to prove I did something nice."

ps I didn't take this pic. and I don't care what others think about it. I think it was a kind, gracious, yet unnecessary gesture on their part. I didn't do it for the recognition or to try to get some hot model. I already got those. This was six months after the fact. It was convenient the next time I was in town. And I supported a local deli that is friends with my family.

But it’s not a Tag store so your point is moot.

Would you tell a guy in a Honda not to park on the street because if it was a Ferrari you wouldn’t park there?
