Mercari suspicions

Yesterday I saw a newer Omega aqua terra with a black leather band at an attractive price on Mercari. I have used Mercari one time in the past to buy a camera, and the transaction was smooth with no problems. What gave me pause this time is the seller has no prior transactions, and there was no detailed description of the watch. Then, as I continued to browse, I saw what looked like the identical watch for sale by two other distinct sellers, both of whom also had no prior transactions! In fact, the photos were almost the same. I wonder what exactly is going on here.

Etsy has many scam / fake listings too. Only buy used from trusted sellers unless you're an expert or need more excitement in your life.

There are definitely scams on Mercari. A lot of the watch listings are the same pictures from eBay listings listed at a much lower price. Like you said, the sellers usually have no prior transactions etc and is just using another sellers pics.

I purchased one item on Mercari a few months ago. It wasn't a watch and I did get the item, but the process was unusual. It took quite a bit of time for the item to be shipped once I paid. I had actually given up on the prospect that I was going to receive the item, then I got a shipping confirmation.

What I found unusual was the funds I paid to the setter were being held until I received and accepted the item. I literally had to actively say that I received the item and the item was OK for Mercari to release the funds to the seller. I thought that their process went above and beyond to protect the buyer. The seller in this case was well established and not new either.
