Icon3 Grey Trade Worth It? DJ -> Sub

So I have a potential trade dilemma which I wanted to run through you guys to see whether I am going crazy or the potential trade works.

Right now I own:

Silver/Gold OP41 - 2020
Rhodium/slate DJ (F&J) - 2020
Black Bay Pro - 2022

I have been waiting on a BLNR or Submariner Date since 2020 and have obviously received neither. Normally this would be OK just waiting, but I’ve had some really poor customer experience from Watches of Switzerland UK that I can’t be bothered to go into; but it has basically put me off trying to purchase any more Rolex at that AD. They pretty much have cornered the game in the UK, especially in the south of England and there is no other viable AD that could get me anything without ‘building a relationship’ aka buying more watches/jewellery.

I started looking at some grey prices for the Sub Date which is around £12k (2021 ‘mint condition’) . I don’t want to deal with eBay and I also have been thinking of trading in my DateJust. I initially bought it because it was meant to be the nice style piece I can wear on date nights, etc. But considering I have a 6 month old at home, those nights are now very few and far between. I simply don’t wear it as much. I may miss it, but tbh I can buy it later in a few years if I really want to.

I have been offered just a little over RRP for it, so I will have to put around £4k on top of the trade for the DJ. The alternative is getting a Pelagos 39, which may fill the casual sporty black-dialed diver gap I am looking to fill. It will cost the same amount-ish as I would need to pay for the DJ -> Sub trade, therefore essentially I am looking at the following trade options:

-DJ + £4k = Submariner
-£3850 = Pelagos 39 and get to keep my DJ.

I wish I could just buy the Sub Date at RRP as that would resolve a lot of issues. But buying grey is new to me and all the potential pitfalls do play in the back of my mind!

After this I will be calling it a day on Rolex I think. The whole sales model is not my style and I simply just wanted a few watches from a company I grew up aspiring to own!

Let me know what you think!

Why have both the BB pro and a Pelagos?

If it were me, I’d sell the BB Pro and OP 41 to fund the submariner.

You’d then have a stellar two piece Rolex combo suitable for any occasion.

If you can afford to add the sub at retail and not sell the DJ then why not sell the black bay pro and add the sub grey?

Retail is nearly £9k on a sub date so £3,500 on the pro takes you there

I love my OP! It’s my GADA and looks that way too, I pretty much wear it anywhere in London, wider England and abroad. It’s pretty much unknown to any prying eyes!

Good points!

The BBP is a functioning tool watch as I regularly use the 24h hand for work purposes. The other 2 things are: the BBP has no warranty card atm due to an AD mess up and I’m still waiting on it being replaced. It’s a almost an 8 week wait so far. Also a few trades I asked about before would not take the BBP so I think I’ll have to try and sell separately on eBay when the card comes through.

I doubt I’d get £3500 though, £2800-3300 seems the ballpark.

When do you see yourself actually wearing the Submariner? It certainly screams Rolex.

or,

If you can swing it, keep the DJ and the OP and sell the BB Pro and do not buy the Pelagos. Then, use the BB Pro sale proceeds and savings from not buying the Pelagos plus added cash to buy the sub….might be a stretch depending on your circumstances.

I don’t think you should consider the Pelagos. It would be a consolation prize for the Sub you really want. It may temporarily scratch the itch, but you’d prob still eventually want a Sub, and you’ll have to eat more losses on selling the Pelagos. I would sell the DJ+cash for sub or wait until you save enough to buy the sub straight up.

If you add the pelagos trust me it won’t fill the void of a Sub.

At £4K you’re 50% away from a sub. Be patient and it will arrive.

My AD said Subs are easier allocations now.

True.

I’m changing to Goldsmiths from a WoS and had a really good interaction with them and they encouraged me to change stores. I know it doesn’t mean much until metal is on wrist, but this maybe my last time trying an AD before going grey again!

I will try and clean up the BBP and putting it in the market and see what I can recoup!

Unless you are an active diver your DJ can do as much in daily use as any Submariner.
Personally I don’t think the Sub looks better than a DJ.
I’d keep what I have and be happy

Sell the Pelagos and save up for the sub. You will have a great 3 watch collection. But I be honest id do what they recommend above and sell the Op41 also. Take the leftover money and buy a oyster band for your DJ41. If you are really wanting it to fly under the radar have the center links polished out.

But if you really love the OP41 sell the Tudor and keep saving. Your almost there. You can even get a no date or the older 6 digit 116 series no date if your worried about budget.
