Ensuring Second and Minutes Hands are Aligned?

Anybody else pay close attention to ensure the second hand and minute hands are properly aligned, or am I the only anal retentive person on the forum? I doubt it. I take a lot of effort to ensure that when the seond hand hits 12, the minute hand is right at the propoer minute marking. On my GMT's (and most of my other hacking watches), I can stop the minute hand on the 12 marker and align the minute hand, but with my two Omega Speedmasters and Baume & Mercier (with the 7753 chronograph movement) I set the seconds hand to 8 and align the minute hand and it "catches up".

Tell me I'm not the only crazy person on the forum?

If I have a minute when setting/winding it up, I'll make sure that the minute hand is exactly (or as close to it as I can get it) on the marker when the second hand hits 12.

You aren’t alone Vance, there’s a whole thread dedicated to movement accuracy- or is it precision with respect to the 32xx movement.

All manner of equipment is being deployed to measure everything down to the millisecond.

I’ve never once considered that maybe they aren’t setting their watches correctly

I set my watches so they are more or less a minute-ish around the the approximate time. I don't worry too much about the exact time. I'm always early for meetings or appointments, so if I'm 14, 15 or 16 minutes early I don't care. If I need the exact time, I use my phone.

I rarely wear the same watch for more than 3 days in a row at most, so I always have to set them when I put them on; can't get too OCD about it.

OCD - That is definitely my problem. I have more than a dozen watches that I keep wound and want them sync'ed. I am more concerned about the hands syncing then being the exact time. I am usually taking 4-5 conference calls/day and use my laptop clock to ensure I am right on time.

In my opinion, that's the point of hacking.

Agree. Well, not on number of watches, but hand alignment. Don’t like when seconds hand hits 12 and minutes hand already a quarter of the way to next minute marker.

Preaching' to the choir there, Vance. I even find that more important than accuracy.

You are not alone. And I am always surprised when I see photos or videos of watches where the second hand is at 12:00 and the minute hand is between minutes. What time is that supposed to represent?

This is soooooo satisfying. If I’m putting on another watch that hasn’t been worn in a while I’ll wait till noon to set it just to do this

I'm so OCD that I have to ensure that the minute hand is exactly half way between the markers when the second hand hits 30 seconds. I need help, desperately.

Agreed: 1) Hack with second hand at 12; 2) set minute hand dead-on a minute or two ahead: 3) wait for that particular minute; 4) push stem in at the click-over time. Bob's yer uncle, an' Fanny's yer aunt.

It's good to have the minute hand hit the minute marker when the seconds hand hits the 12, or maybe up to 10 seconds either side. I always take care to set it like that, or sometimes halfway between two minute markers when the seconds hand hits the six is easier.

I do this religiously. Depending on the movement I’m working with it sometimes takes three or four tries to get it perfect. Live and let live and to each their own and all that but I don’t understand the point of owning an accurate watch and not setting it precisely.

100%!!
I am completely anal about this, I take more time on my Speedmaster as that is a little more tricky to deal with.

On my Sea Dweller, I just stop it once a week and let the real time catch up, it only speeds up about 8-10 seconds in a week, so its easy enough to just stop it for that time and then start it again....

I wonder whether many people worry about this as well, and clearly they do!!

I don’t worry about this at all. And I am super picky about stuff in general. I’ve never thought of doing this

I can assure you, you are not the only one who does this.

I find that it is easier to do with my Speedmasters than my Rolex models.

C’mon Dan, that second hand isn’t even close to the marker and not in line with the minute hand?

Not that I noticed.
