I prefer the 36, but it looks like you can easily pull the 40 off.

Whatever you do, do not go to the AD wearing a big watch - The 36 will seem tiny. The first time I tried on the 36mm, I was wearing an Apple watch (at gym), and I thought it was so small. The second time I went wearing my Dad's "Date" from '63 and it was perfect.

It really depends on how tight you want the watch to be. For me, I prefer 40 so the watch won’t be too tight on my wrist.
