Buying Jewelry to get a Rolex?
At what extend does buying a jewelry made from the boutique helps you get your Rolex? Let's say that I'm waiting for GMT and willing to spend 2-3k on some jewelry, can it helps me get further on the list? Could I get it in months or a year? Already been waiting for 8 months.
Please note that if I buy some jewelry it would make my wife really happy so win-win in this case if I can get my watch. My current spend history with this AD is 14k (Rolex watch) |

It depends on how much other people who want the same watch are spending.

It absolutely can help. Or it might not at all.
We don't know your AD, whether $3k will make any impression on them, how long their "list" for your watch is or how competitive your local market is. You can ask them and they will tell you something that may or may not be true. Personally I wouldn't.

It helps, but, also depends on the watch you want. Pepsi/Daytona from an AD in a major metro city might need at least $200k in spend (watches and jewelry) vs Datejust which might not require spend history. Honestly, unless you’re in the watch game for the long haul, just buy direct from a grey market dealer and save yourself the money, time and BS stress.

Not sure you even want jewelry that is 3k or less.

I've spent 10k on jewelery. Haven't heard from the AD on a damn DJ yet.

+1. Maybe a tiny 14kt gold ring with a nice .50ct earth diamond.
I don’t think I’d walk into Tiffany, Cartier or Harry Winston with a budget of 2~3K but TRAX just may be able do a tiny pavé ring or some sparkly 3/4ct lab grown Princess Cut studs. |

I don't think $2-3k would do anything for a GMT. Those and Daytonas are usually rewards to their VIPs.

I spent $1,800 total on 3 gifts which included a Hamilton watch, earrings and a ring. It took a full 2 years but I received my BLNR on jubilee two months ago.

Very good timing, see thread I just posted. Man is suing Shreve after he spends $220K for the "chance" to purchase a Patek

It’s the same as: How many drinks do you send over to a strange woman in a club before she might leave with you??

I agree with others in that I don’t think 2-3k will move the needle, you need to either be a super loyal customer who has dealt with them for years and they know and like you, know someone who can make it happen there like my neighbor who knows the owner, or spend enough to be considered a high value client

Lots of comments in that hodinkee article referencing Rolex, amazing to think of how intense the market has gotten for so many things, I remember when people would only recommend authorized dealers but now it’s like you have to go grey unless you’ve got an angle you can work

OP, why not buy the jewelry simply because you know it will make your wife happy? What if everyone here said don’t do it, would you deprive your wife of this happiness? Must every purchase be leverage? This is the only reason to buy jewelry at an AD. If it ends up incidentally advancing your cause then that’s a bonus.

To me it seems utterly pointless buying something on the off chance you might get something down the line. And at the sort of numbers you are talking about would it really make that much difference?

Like some above have mentioned a lot may depend on the location of the AD. Here in southern california the stakes are higher. Don't buy jewelry you don't want. To get my Pepsi on jubilee I ended up having to bundle a 3 CT 25th anniversary stone to get one. But I was already planning on getting the stone.

Depending on the AD, it's more about relationship building than spend history. I would never buy something I didn't want. Might as well just go grey and save yourself some money in the long run.
Over the past 4 years I've purchased one Tudor, two Rolex's and one Breitling at my AD. All watches I wanted, and not just something to build a spend history with them. But what has gotten me these watches is my relationship with them, not what I have purchased. I visit with my SA once a month and just talk about watches, family and life in general. I love talking watches with him. And it is this relationship that is getting me the watches I have, and hope to see a Daytona some time this year. |

i'm in Phoenix. which AD? C+T is good. Hamra is less good if you don't fit the ideal client mold

It's impossible to tell for sure because it varies from one AD to the other. That said, it definitely will always help to buy stuff.
Now ask yourself... If you're going to spend 3k on jewelry to MAYBE get the opportunity to maybe one day be able to buy an 11k watch from them, that's 14k plus tax, so roughly 15k+. Wouldn't you be better off buying a great condition pre-owned GMT for 16k (or more depending on the model)? |

Depends on the seller. There's not fixed rule or model. There might also be an element involved of what they think you will be prepared to buy. If they think you will buy anything they will try to sell you everything, which is fine if you actually want the jewelry. If you don't want it, don't buy it.

I wouldn't buy something I didn't want just to be able to, at some point, maybe, buy something I do want.
