I'm an average programmer, and have zero interest in collecting or hunting.

I've one watch and it makes me smile every morning when I put it on.

IMO, there really isn't a "hunt" anymore if you are purchasing from an AD. You ask for what you want and depending on who you are, relationship, local market, purchase history, etc you receive the watch immediately, at some point in the future or never.
For me what remains is research. Given the dynamics in the market for timepieces these days, it rarely leads to an active hunt and only occasionally to an actual AD request.

The hunt?

For us that do not go gray, is it the hunt for the next piece that keeps us going? Is it our A type personalities that keeps us looking for that success in the hobby?

Kinda bored today so thought I would start up a conversation. What is everyone’s thoughts?

I’m like you, not feeding greys by buying current production pieces over retail pricing, would rather buy something else

The hunt is a lot of fun. The AD games are an absolute turnoff.

The hunt?

Vintage only. Way more rewarding. I don’t want the same watch everyone else has.

I’ve always had buyers remorse with large purchases and sometimes small purchases.

I’m the completely opposite, it’s not the hunt it’s narrowing down exactly what you want and then one day getting it.

My Wife is suggesting after I get my sub I think about another equivalent watch since we have two sons, and I can’t think of anything else I would even want that brings me the same visual delight.

I think that would be an inaccurate assumption.

It’s just a watch, at best, it’s a nice shiny object on your wrist. Most likely, nobody will ever notice.
I have to agree. A lot of people I know don't have a clue I'm into watches like I am. I have literally never considered whether I'm "successful" in this hobby; not once. I'm not even sure what that would mean!

The research is fun, the hunt is exciting, and the anticipation is energizing; however, buying in the grey market is none of those things - to me, it's like cheating. No offense to those that buy/sell in the grey market, but "the fun" is in not knowing how things are going to turn - heck, you may even change your mind along the way. But you do get "the call", well, after a few weeks/months have passed, hopefully you have the means to do it all over again. Although my hunt was not nearly as long as most here, I can't imagine waiting years either - but it's like my Dad used to say, what's better than buying that special item is knowing you can and walking away.....-So in the meantime, open a high-yield savings account and have that money make money.

I think the OP was referring to us being successful in our various chosen professions. If we weren’t somewhat so, we could not afford to pay thousands of dollars, for one watch. I never think of competing with others on here. Firstly, I’d lose, as my collection is mostly mid- tier stuff. I am happy to have gotten my one brand new Rolex, at MSRP, and even happier, that I paid cash, as I did for the rest of my collection. I am starting to sell some off, as I would like a nice DJ, or a Speedy Pro, or maybe a Sub.
