Hate is such an ugly, toxic, destructive state of mind. I don't think this is entirely about watches.

Why, yes. Yes, I do. I don't even bother looking or caring when I see numbers except for 16710.

I know only what I know — I’ve no idea, for instance, what that last Daytona is (because I have no interest in anything other than GMT watches). Accordingly, I don’t know many other references either!

I’ve got a rough ability to discern a 5513 from a 16610 (ish), but much past that I don’t know anything! So for me both your descriptors and the reference number aren’t very helpful.

I guess we know what we know!

I'm more apt to participate in a thread with descriptions. I know some reference numbers, but not a lot, and google imaging "Rolex XXXXXX" in another tab just to see what is being talked about gets old.

Similar to what Lee said earlier, I think knowing ref numbers of what you have and what you are interested in helps on the forum and does help with ADs. It shows them you are more serious than whatever is popular on Instagram . For sure that is true with Patek but I sometimes get those wrong so I just brush up on that before i go. It’s probably smart to know the ticker symbol before buying the stock.

well, a ref number conveys essentially the same information as "2017 yahchtmaster rose gold and chocolate" with just a few characters: 116623

Yeah. I spotted that after I posted. I'm still learning to type, learning to read will take longer.

Doesn't bother me too much. If I see a post starts with a load of reference numbers I don't recognise, then I just don't read it. But that's ok: it's a post for people who know their reference numbers.
