Need your help wit this vintage unicorn
This watch was given to my grandfather as a gift by an Egyptian navy soldier in the 70's. There is a chance that it is the GPF 2/56. All signs point to yes but we are unable to open the case. The screws are probably rusty.

If it’s real, it’s worth some serious money.

I disagree. His best bet is a vintage dealer, or better yet Perezcope.

I will second Perezscope. If you are a podcast person, check out "Rico's Podcast," there are two separate episodes where Perezscope discusses Panerai, its history, and that particular watch. He has also written a number of articles which you can find easily online.
If real, you have a treasure that is extremely valuable. Best of luck, and please keep us updated. Just out of curiosity, what is the case size? |

I’ve messaged Jose (Perezcope). If real, this is an extraordinary piece of history.

Important update: if this is a genuine article than it’s even more special than I initially thought. I consulted my copy of the Panerai bible “Panerai Una Storia Italiana” and it appears that GPF 2/56 with the “Luminor” inscription on the dial are late and rare examples in the production sequence. A total of 100 GPF 2/56 watches were commissioned by the Egyptian navy, out of which ~50 were produced and delivered, most with the “Radiomir” inscription instead of “Luminor” on the dial. It is unclear how many “Luminor” examples were made out of those 50.
I’ll post some pictures from the book a bit later.
