Yes I got the lunar new year gift. Red envelopes, coasters and tea in the set.

Got some light orb for mid autumn festival and backgammon set for Christmas.

For recent purchases, I got a hat and hoodie.

In the last few months, got the backgammon set, lunar new years package, advent of calendar chocolates for Xmas, desk clock, and watch stand. Champagne and diffuser set for birthday. I think the clients in Asia get the best gifts though.

That's like Christmas every month. A clock and stand? That's amazing.

I just bought my first AP a month or so ago. Would gifts be even sent to someone like me this early in the AP journey?

lol why would anyone use cash these days for a high priced item, or even wire? Amex platinum can cover most purchases up to around $100k and you get points + protection

Depends on situation the boutiques only accept wire. I hate that too.

hmm... that watch stand. The last thing I want my unworn watch to be around is a rough rock that can scratch my watch as I fumble it onto the stand.

Actually, it's pretty useful. I have it on my desk at home and I use it to set the watch down when I get home. There is a lot of clearance between the base and the pillow that hitting the base as you place it down is a non issue.

If you pay such an amount with Amex in many european countries they would kick you out of the store.

Not all the world is the USA, some countries can do instant wire transfers without any cost.

I think you missed the point; I wasn't making any american-centric claim with that statement. anyone, anywhere in the world can do whatever they want with their money, I couldn't care less lol

im just pointing out that most cc companies (inc but not limited to amex) pay 1% cash back, offers some sort of protection, and has other benefits based on annual spend. no real benefit to using cash/wire even with no fees. even on a $30k watch you can get $450 in points with 1% and 1.5 multiplier on travel and food.

You might not realise, but yes, that's quite american-centric.

Most cards everywhere else don't have cash back, they might offer protection but that's not really useful unless for online purchases.

In the USA it makes sense, the credit score plays a huge impact (not so much in most of the world) and you get nice cashbacks. And wire transfers can be a pain. All the cashbacks and extra perks are just to push more card usage but it doesn't happen like that everywhere in the world.

As I said in the previous message it's quite possible that a store in Europe will refuse Amex for big purchases. They take the biggest comission out of all card issuers (depending on country 1.5-5%) and they are also the less safe option for the business, chargebacks are quite common. They would be ok with Visa or Mastercard but Amex is expensive and a risk for the store.

In my case I paid most of my watches by transfer done the same day or the day before, and a few also with card just on the spot, but there was no benefit for me using one system or another like in your case.

Anyway, my bad, let's get back to the original topic!

I think you missed the point again. my point is not about amex, and not about America as a country lol (although I would argue America is the best country if we are on that topic). again, you and everyone else here can do whatever you want with your money.

but my point is: even if there are no cash back points, even if there are no wire fees (wires are free in the us too usually with balances over $150-250k depending on the bank), even if you don't care about CC protections, there is still tremendous value in using a cc over cash/wire.

having a line of credit for even 30 days saves you about >$100 if you just let that cash sit in a risk free HYSA at 5.5% (yes, this rate is in USA not Spain, but I'm sure you get the point) and pay off your statement at the due date. obviously you can make more if you have it sitting in stocks/crypto too. we can be even more technical and debate the short term impacts to your credit score when your CC reports a huge delta in your utilization rate to the credit bureaus, but any immaterial impact will be offset the next month anyway.

$100 may not be that much money to you or others here, but I'll take a free $100 in "interest" + $450 in points + hit spending limits + receive theft protections for free from a $30k purchase with my AMERICAN cc

transition back to the topic...I think the "gifts" you get from using a credit card on any purchase is better than most AP gifts...except for some of the cool desk clocks...

I'm in Asia and use AMEX for the points and protection. I won't do watch purchases without it. It's a shame Europe seems to make that difficult? Good to know I guess.

For gifts I've gotten the mid autumn and lunar new year gifts, no backgammon which I was a bit sad about, but it seems maybe they didn't do that here.
